A forming assembly comprises two presser members (22,24) each having a corrugated surface for receiving a workpiece made up of generally diamond-shaped pockets (10). Each presser member is made up of sections (22a,22b; 24a, 24b) mounted on slide rods (38) for movement between a spaced-apart position, in which a workpiece can be located therebetween, and a closed position, movement into which, while the workpiece is held between the presser members, is effective to compress the workpiece laterally. For holding the pockets in their diamond shape formers (20) are inserted therein. A flange (18) is formed at one end of the workpiece and integral therewith by pressing outwardly folded material against a lateral end face of the presser members (22,24) using a presser plate (52). This forming method is especially suitable for forming self-supporting filter units.

A process and apparatus for the manufacture of a pleated filter insert made of a thermoplastic material. The pleat walls are maintained at a distance with the filter pleats open in the direction of outflow of the filter insert by elongated ribs made of the filter material itself. The tape-like filter material is gathered in a first process step. The elongated ribs are produced by means of tension-free, permanent shaping of the gathered filter material, heated to a temperature which is below the shrinking temperature and above the deformation temperature of the filter material, between the jaws of a shaping device. The intermediate areas of the filter material intended for the forming of pleat wall edges are heated by at least one heater jaw to a temperature which is between the deformation temperature and the melting temperature until the irregularities of the filter material in the intermediate area have been smoothed out. The filter insert, provided with elongated ribs in the filter pleat wall for maintaining a distance also maintains the original filtering properties in the pleat walls, has a smooth surface at the pleat wall edges, and has sufficient stability.

Process for the production of filters whose active filtering part is made up of a folded filter material web, preferably made from paper, which folded web is delimited in the process by side edges at which the folds terminate, and end edges at which a first or last fold is located, so that in this way filter units (49) are formed. The filter units (49) are produced in an automatized process in which the filter material web is creased and pushed together to form the folds. The spacings between the folds are maintained constant by means of a screw element with threads pushing down between the folds and forming spacing elements between these. The screw element is rotataed during forward movement of the folded web. Glue-coated strips are pressed onto the said side edges of the web, so that the ends of the folds are covered over by the strips. The blank, which is thus continuously produced and which comprises the folded material web and the strips glued onto its side edges, is cut off to form the filter units (49). Several such filter units (49) are assembled in a casing (69) to form a filter having a filter surface which corresponds to the combined surface of the units included.

A method and apparatus are disclosed for providing a crimp seal pleated filter assembly having a two piece housing with a filter media disposed within the housing and having a plurality of alternating pleats. The apparatus includes a first and second jig for supporting the housing halves and an odd number of at least three or more movable pleat forming blades on one side of the apparatus. The odd number of blades are movable through one of the supporting jigs with blade edges opposing the other supporting jig. The odd number of blades includes an independently movable center blade and a first pair of outer blades with opposing surfaces of adjacent blades defining a first plurality of pleat forming spaces. An even number of pleat forming blades are positioned with blade edges opposing the first plurality of pleat forming spaces and are spaced apart from and in alignment with the opposing pleat forming blades. The even number of pleat forming blades includes at least a pair of center blades which project through the other supporting jig during pleat formation and define a pleat forming space in which a first center pleat is formed. The blades and the jigs are moved toward one another in a predetermined sequence for the blades to form desired pleats within a filter media and for the jigs to urge the filter housing around the pleated filter media to crimp seal and encapsulate the media within the housing.

Apparatus and method for forming an axial flow filter element from a fan or sectorial shaped sheet having parallel curved ends, straight sides converging at an angle less than 180.degree. and a plurality of curved ridges and valleys extending between the sides parallel to the curved ends. Holding wedges are inserted into the valleys in the upper side of the sheet while the latter is supported on a table. The pitch between the holding wedges is then reduced uniformly to reduce the radial length of the sheet. The sheet is then partially rounded into a semi-circular shape to increase the central angle of the sectorial shape sheet to as much as 180.degree. by forcing the wider convex end of the reduced sheet toward a circular post centrally engaging the midpoint of the smaller concave end of the sheet. The partially rounded sheet, then is reformed to impart true circular arcs to the ridges and valleys by inserting reforming wedges into the valleys in one side of the sheet and sliding the wedges along those valleys along fixed predetermined circular arcs.

An automatic wrapping apparatus for wrapping an external tape support about a filter element includes an indexable turret assembly having a plurality of filter element clamps rotatably mounted at spaced radial positions on the indexable turret. Means are provided at one of the radial positions for rotating a filter element clamp about a longitudinal axis. The wrapping apparatus also includes means for selectively varying the position of the strand of tape along the longitudinal axis during rotation of the clamp. Further, the apparatus includes means for severing the strand of tape and wrapping the severed ends about a respective pleated filter assembly.A method for wrapping an external tape support about a pleated filter element includes clamping a pleated filer between opposed face surfaces, contacting one end of a continuous strand of adhesive coated tape with an outer pleated edge surface of the pleated filter assembly carried in the clamp fixture, rotating the filter element assembly about a longitudinal axis and simultaneously move the position of the taped material in one direction along the longitudinal axis to spirally wrap the tape externally about the pleated filter element. After wrapping, the filter element is indexed to a second radial position and the trailing strand of tape is severed, producing a loose end which is pressed into contact with the outer ede surfaces of the pleated filter element.The present invention is particularly useful in the automatic assembly of cylindrical filter cartridge elements.

A method and apparatus for making axial-flow filters wherein a sectorial-shaped sheet of filter material having corrugations therein parallel to the curved ends thereof is made from a flat sheet of filter material in the first step, and thereafter the corrugated sheet is made into an annulus to obtain the final product. In the first step, an edge portion of a flat sheet of filter material is attached to a sectorial-shaped mold, having a mold surface defined by curved ridges and valleys parallel to the curved ends of the mold, so that the sheet is slanted up away from the mold surface from the smaller curved end of the mold. Thereafter a set of curved forming blades is moved down toward the mold to engage the sheet and to fold it successively and consecutively across the ridges of the mold and beneath the edges of the blades into the valleys of the mold to corrugate the sheet. In the second step, the corrugated sheet thus produced is made into an annulus by using a contouring belt which embraces the larger convexly curved ends of the sheet and constricts the sheet into an annulus.

A filter for separating constituent components of fluids includes a plural-layer sheet-like member which is multiply pleated to provide layers of the same or different porosity or to provide structural support layers for pleating a soft or membrane-like filter layer. The multiple layers may be pre-joined or delivered from individual locations to a pneumatic conveyor passage of predetermined cross-section through which the adjacent layers are conveyed by a conveyor gas. The layers are crimped to form pleats by withdrawing the material at a lower linear speed than that at which it is supplied to the passage. Pleating is facilitated by venting the conveyor gas at a passage section of enlarged cross-section. The pleating material is subjected to a hot gas, such as steam, and then cooled by a cooling gas to effect bonding of the layers in the pleated state.

Method and apparatus for producing closed loop accordion pleated filters. Accordion pleated filter structures are advanced from a feeder hopper one at a time by pusher members and guided along guide means arranged in a converging fashion and which pass between the endmost pleats to bring the ends of the pleated filter toward one another. Second pusher means then move the pleated filter, which is now arranged in a substantially U-shaped configuration, along the guide members to orient the outermost pleats into a substantially common horizontal plane. Third pusher means move the outermost flaps upon a pair of blades and substantially surrounding one arm of a paddle wheel assembly. A suitable hot melt is deposited upon the surfaces of one of the outermost flaps. The blades swing downwardly and move toward one another to press the outermost flaps having a hot melt deposited thereon into firm engagement. The blades remain together for a period sufficient for the adhesive to at least partially "set" and are then lifted upwardly and away from the filter to prevent separation of the flaps joined by the hot melt. The paddle wheel supporting the completed filter element rotates towards stripper means which pushes the completed closed loop accordion pleated filter off of the paddle wheel arm and onto an output conveyor. The operation is completely automated from the time that the accordion pleated filters are placed in the infeed hopper.
