摘要: A device and method for treating a vein to improve its structural integrity. Heating the vein causes at least a portion of the cross links of the collagen in the vein to unlink/open and subsequently form new cross links after the collagen fibers have realigned. The procedure produces a vein that is less flaccid and more resilient. The lumen can have a larger diameter and a shaped smoother inner surface.

摘要: A catheter delivers an electrode within a vein for a minimally invasive treatment of hemorrhoids using RF energy. The catheter is introduced into a patient and positioned within the section of the vein to be treated. The electrode radiates high frequency energy towards the vein, and the surrounding venous tissue becomes heated and begins to shrink. The catheter includes a controllable member for limiting the amount of shrinkage of the vein to the diameter of the member. The electrode remains active until there has been sufficient shrinkage of the vein. The extent of shrinkage of the vein can be detected by fluoroscopy. After treating one section of the vein, the catheter and the electrode can be repositioned within the hemorrhoidal venous system to treat different sections until all desired venous sections and valves are repaired and rendered functionally competent. Shrinkage of the vein further thickens and stiffens the vein wall which reduces the potential for the hemorrhoid vein to dilate.

摘要: A device and method for creating sterile surgical access to internal body parts through a natural opening of an internal body cavity are disclosed. The device includes an elongate body member with a distal end that is inserted into the natural body opening and at least one channel that extends along the length of the body member. One of the channels, a wash channel, carries a cleansing fluid which is ejected through nozzle jets to wash a portion of a wall of the internal body cavity. The wash channel is also operatively associated with a vacuum source so that suction through the nozzle jets results in a fluid-tight connection between the distal end of the body member and the portion of the wall. A perforation channel having a deformable inflation member located between the proximal and distal ends of the channel when not inflated to maintain its sterility is inflated to extend beyond the distal end of the body member. A perforation element on the inflation member creates a hole in the portion of a wall through which a part of the deformable inflation member can extend to assume a shape having at least a section larger than the hole's diameter. Surgical instruments can be inserted in the proximal end of the body member for manipulation and visualization of the internal body parts at the distal end of the body member.

摘要: A device and method for treating patent ductus arteriosus in a human. A catheter having a collapsible/expandable heating element at a distal end for entering an infant transcutaneously and being advanced to the ductus arteriosus. A method of heating the inner surface of the ductus arteriosus with the heating element to a temperature sufficient to produce a material change in the collagen of the ductus arteriosus such that the ductus arteriosus passage shrinks to closure.

摘要: The invention is embodied in an appliance or a prosthesis and a delivery catheter for use in a vein for minimally invasive treatment of chronic venous insufficiency. The system and method of the invention eliminate the need for open surgical valve repair procedures, obviate the need for arm vein transplantation into the leg, and allow patients to return to their former active lifestyles without the limitations currently associated with the treatment of this condition. An incompetent valve to be repaired is identified by injected contrast through the delivery catheter or similar means and the catheter is positioned at that valve, a clip appliance or similar prosthesis is deployed from the catheter and affixed to the valve. Next, the delivery catheter is repositioned and appliances or prostheses are deployed on sequentially lower valves until all desired valves are repaired and functionally competent.

摘要: A test system and method for evaluating the efficiency of the venous pump in leg muscles and for identifying incompetent venous valves. The test system comprises a legging having inflatable bladders, a manifold and a system controller. A pressurized inflation source is provided which is in fluid communication with the manifold and the legging. The controller sequences valves within the manifold to inflate and deflate the bladders of the legging. The test system further includes a Doppler blood flow sensor interfaced to the controller. The sensor is configured with a housing which contains a rotatable disk, upon which two pairs of crystals are disposed. The sensor housing is secured a leg of a patient proximate a blood vessel in which blood flow is to be measured. The patient is positioned on a reclinable test station, upon which the controller and manifold may be mounted. The maximum volume of venous blood output from the leg is measured and the venous output flow is subsequently measured after the bladders are sequentially inflated above a first location on the leg of the patient. Reduced venous output flow from the maximum volume output indicates reflux and identifies the location of an incompetent valve.
