Processes for the simultaneous desulfurization and hydroconversion of heavy carbonaceous feeds, including various sulfur-containing heavy petroleum oils, are disclosed. These feeds are contacted with alkali metal hydroxides in a conversion zone, in the presence of added hydrogen, and at elevated temperatures, whereby the feeds are substantially desulfurized, while at the same time significant upgrading of these feedstocks is obtained as demonstrated by decreased Conradson carbon, increased API gravity, and the conversion of a substantial portion of the 1,050.degree. F+ portion of the feedstream. In addition, methods for the regeneration of alkali metal hydroxides from the alkali metal salts produced in the conversion zone are disclosed.

A process for hydrocracking hydrocarbon stocks by contacting such stocks under hydrocracking conditions with a nickel oxidetungsten oxide catalyst distended on an ultrastable faujasite base that has been exchanged to incorporate chromium oxide therein. The use of this catalyst allows the refiner to hydrocrack feedstocks that contain large quantities of sulphur and nitrogen compounds. The use of the specially prepared chromium zeolite base also increases the life of the catalyst.

The instant invention relates to a novel hydrocracking process wherein carbon-carbon bonds are ruptured and carbon-hydrogen bonds are formed in the presence of hydrogen and a catalyst comprising platinum, iridium and rhodium supported on an inorganic refractory oxide. This process relates to the dealkylation of alkyl aromatics to form lower molecular weight aromatics, for example, alkylbenzenes such as ethylbenzene, xylene, toluene, etc. may be converted to benzene in the process of the instant invention. The process can also be used to convert a gas-oil fraction to gasoline by converting the higher molecular weight constituents of the gas-oil fraction to lower molecular weight products.

A process for manufacturing a lubricating oil comprising a first step of passing a deasphalted crude oil distillation residue containing by weight at least 85 percent of constituents boiling above 500*C and at least 75 percent of consituents boiling above 525*C, with hydrogen over a hydrogenating catalyst with a cracking carrier at 330*-450*C, at a hydrogen partial pressure of 80-240 kg/cm2, at such a flow rate that the hydrocarbons in the resulting product boiling below 525*C amount to 70-95 percent of the initial weight of such hydrocarbons, separating the products boiling below 525*C, and recovering a first lubricating oil fraction of high V.I. and a second step of passing at least a portion of the products boiling above 525*C over a similar catalyst, at the same temperature and pressure ranges of the first step, at such a flow rate that the major part of the first zone heavy products are converted to products boiling below 525*C and separating therefrom, by distillation, a second lubricating oil fraction.

Heavy hydrocarbon feed oils such as heavy gas oils, residium, topped crude oils and the like are hydrocracked by mixing hydrogen with the feed oil in the ratio of hydrogen to feed oil in the range from 4000 to 10,000 SCF of hydrogen per barrel of feed oil and contacting this mixture under hydro-treating conditions with a supported micro-spherical catalyst having 5-20 weight per cent tungsten and 0.5 to 5.0 weight per cent rhenium. Increased isoparaffin and aromatic content in the cracked product is obtained.

A high-viscosity-index mineral lubricating oil is produced by treating, for instance, a deasphalted residuum or a raw, heavy lubricating distillate oil in a two-stage process. The feedstock is first catalytically hydrocracked, then catalytically hydrogenated and can be fractionated and dewaxed to produce a finished product. Catalysts such as nickel-tungstate on boriaalumina and nickel-molybdate on alumina are employed in the two stages, respectively. The catalysts are preferably used in sulfided form.
