A transparent polycrystalline ceramic having scattering and absorption loss less than 0.2/cm over a region comprising more than 95% of the originally densified shape and a process for fabricating the same by hot pressing. The ceramic can be any suitable ceramic such as yttria (Y2O3) or scandia (Sc2O3) and can have a doping level of from 0 to 20% and a grain size of greater than 30 although the grains can also be smaller than 30 μm. Ceramic nanoparticles can be coated with a sintering aid to minimize direct contact of adjacent ceramic powder particles and then baked at high temperatures to remove impurities from the coated particles. The thus-coated particles can then be densified by hot pressing into the final ceramic product. The invention further provides a transparent polycrystalline ceramic solid-state laser material and a laser using the hot pressed polycrystalline ceramic.

A high purity nano-sized Yb3+ doped Y2O3 (Yb:Y2O3) ceramic powder with a narrow size distribution and without hard agglomerates is provided. Also provided is a process for manufacturing the same wherein water in the reaction bath is replaced by a non-water washing agent having little or no hydrogen bonding capability to inhibit the formation of hard agglomerates in the ceramic powder.

More specifically, the additive includes a capped particle comprising: (i) one or more inorganic core particles; and (ii) one or more multi-block copolymers attached to the inorganic particles. The multi-block copolymer includes at least one nonpolar polymer block interposed between two polar polymer blocks. One polar polymer block is attached to the core particle, and at least a portion of the another polar polymer block is not directly attached to, the core particle. When used in a lubricant to lubricate a metallic surface of a workpiece, the capped particle preferably adheres to the metallic surface of the workpiece.

An improved mat is disclosed. Long and short legs support the mat and cause it to feel resilient although it is fabricated from hard rubber. The mat has drain holes on vertical surfaces. Ribs prevent the mat from embedding within grating. Grit is selectively placed upon the mat and physically supported. Adhesive for bonding the grit is retained by retention lips. Also disclosed is a process for creating drain holes on vertical surfaces of mats by attaching a grooving tool to a robot and programming the robot to cut through molded mat channels to create the desired drain holes. An additional process uses the robot to selectively place adhesive upon the mat. An adhesive dispenser is attached to the robot and the robot is appropriately programmed.

Silica-dysprosium oxide core-shell nanoparticles and a method for preparing the silica-dysprosium oxide core-shell nanoparticles are disclosed. Initially, ethyl silicate, n-butanol, ethylenediamine, and distilled water are mixed in the presence of ultrasonic radiation to prepare silica nanoparticles. Then, the silica nanoparticles are isolated. Next, the isolated silica nanoparticles, an acid, n-butanol, and dysprosium oxide are mixed in the presence of ultrasonic radiation to prepare silica-dysprosium oxide core-shell nanoparticles. Finally, the silica-dysprosium oxide core-shell nanoparticles are isolated.
