    摘要: A method and apparatus are described. A thermosetting molding material, suitably a synthetic resin composition such as a phenolic molding composition, is initially heated and plasticized. The plasticized mass is passed as a stream through an injection nozzle which is maintained at a temperature sufficiently high to keep the mass in a plasticized condition but sufficiently low to avoid any substantial curing or setting-up of the mass. The plasticized mass is next passed through a temperature-controlled zone maintained at a temperature sufficiently high to keep the mass in a plasticized condition but sufficiently low to avoid any substantial curing or setting-up of the mass. The plasticized stream is passed into a partially open, heated mold. The mold cavity is maintained at temperatures sufficiently high to cure the thermosetting molding material. When the partially open mold is partially full, the feed steam is interrupted, and the mold is then completely closed to press and cure the enclosed plasticized material. The cured, finished article is removed from the mold and the process repeated.An apparatus for conducting the process of the invention includes a stationary assembly and a movable assembly. The stationary assembly is comprised of a stationary platen which has a heat plate, a temperature-controlled sprue bushing and a mold face positioned thereon. The movable assembly is comprised of a movable platen which has a heat place mounted thereon and a mold face, corresponding to, and adapted to be aligned with, the mold face on the stationary assembly to form a partially open mold cavity. Means are provided to feed a supply of thermosetting molding material through the sprue bushing into the partially open mold cavity. Means are provided to completely close the mold cavity and place the apparatus in a compression stage. Means are also provided for the subsequent retraction of the movable assembly to allow removal of a molded article and access to the mold area.

    摘要: Method and apparatus for molding polymeric materials using the reaction injection mixing (RIM) technique of combining two or more chemically reactive components immediately prior to their introduction into a mold. The invention is more particularly adapted to RIM molding of polyamide (nylon) type polymers, but is also useful for urethane polymers. In either case the polymers may be of the unfilled or of the reinforced type. Modification of conventional RIM technique is made to meet higher component temperature conditions required for nylon molding as compared to urethane polymers, for example. A characterizing feature of the invention is the employment of an attempering "oil tracer" system comprising casings and jackets enclosing the flow paths of each of the several reactive components, and the flow therethrough of a temperature-controlled oil or other fluid medium in heat-exchange but non-fluid communication with the reactive components. Arrangement is made for zoning the component flow paths, and selectively controlling the delivery of attempering oil to different zones whereby to provide flexibility of temperature control at different zones.

    摘要: A polyurethane RIM system has at least two molding stations. The reactants are brought to the mixheads as three separate streams. One stream contains the isocyanate, the second stream contains some of the polyol, the chain extender and crosslinker and a third stream contains additional amounts of the polyol, along with what additives might be desired. At each mixhead the proportions of ingredients are controlled to give an isocyanate index of about 100, but the ratio of one polyol stream to the other is regulated to control the flex modulus and other properties of the molded product as may be desired. In this way, one source of supply can be used to feed several molding stations, each of wich may produce a product of different physical properties and thus of different costs.

    摘要: A windshield repair device comprising a vacuum cup with a built-in piston and cylinder assembly is characterized by a transverse opening in the cylinder so that when the piston is partly withdrawn, gas bubbles can be drawn out of the repair liquid by the vacuum holding the cup in place against the glass. In operation, after the bubbles are removed from the liquid, the piston is moved toward the glass. The piston closes off fluid communication through the transverse opening in the cylinder and as it moves further toward the glass, it forces repair liquid into the damaged area. One end of the cylinder is provided with a sealing ring which bears against the face of the windshield to provide a seal. The cylinder is used as a reservoir for repair liquid, and allows gas bubbles to be removed from the liquid by the vacuum holding the cup in place. The piston has a pointed projection at its end which bears against a separated cone of glass in the damaged area and breaks the seal between the cylinder and the face of the windshield when pressure in the repair liquid approaches a level such that it is likely to cause permanent damage by delamination of the windshield.

An apparatus for practicing the process is also disclosed. The waste of the molding material can be reduced at least by the amount conventionally needed for filling the main and auxiliary runners.

    摘要: Liquid compositions suitable for hot post-mold coating of cured sheet molding compound (SMC) parts comprise a reaction product of an epoxide and an unsaturated carboxylic acid mixed with a low shrink additive and a filler having a sheet-like structure. These liquid compositions are used to smooth surfaces, fill porosity and other voids and to eliminate or reduce sink marks. Coatings typically are cured in less than two minutes and appear able to provide many features of normal painting without paint facilities except possibly those needed for touch-up.The application method used to date has been to compression mold an SMC part in the usual way, separate the mold halves, inject the liquid composition and reclose the mold for a second cure cycle. A unique feature of the liquid composition is its ability to adhere to an uncleaned SMC molding.

    摘要: Sealed, molded fiberglass doors and the framing members which surround them, such as used on utility trucks and other purposes, are in the present invention molded in a single piece. The door panel, originally formed recessed inwardly from the framing member, is bounded by an outward facing V-groove whose outer wall slopes toward the framing member. The integral molded part is then severed to divide the sloping outer wall into a framing member flange and the outer margin of a V-flange which bounds the door. On fitting the cut edge of this V-flange with a heavily cushioned channel gasket, and presenting the door against the flange of the framing member, a secure seal is effected without any tendency to pull the gasket off the door edge, even when frozen. Forming the parts integrally not only saves mold costs and material costs, but also assures perfect fit.

    摘要: This invention concerns a process for fabricating fiber reinforced thermoset resin articles. The process comprises the steps of (a) providing in a distributing zone, an intimate mixture of one or more fibers with a melting point or a glass transition temperature above about 130.degree. C. and a fiber length greater than about 0.5 centimeters, and a liquid resin, said resin having a viscosity of less than about 3000 centipoise at 25.degree. C., (b) injecting said mixture into the cavity of a closed matched metal die mold, thereby filling said cavity with said mixture, (c) heating said mixture so as to cause an exothermic reaction to occur in said mold, and (d) opening said mold and recovering a thermoset fiber reinforced molded article therefrom.
