摘要： A method and apparatus for splitting wood slabs substantially along the wood grain into longitudinal-grain wood strands are provided. The apparatus comprises a rotating disc splitter having a pair of parallel rotary shafts each having centered thereon and secured thereto a series of spaced apart circular discs, means for counter rotating the shafts to pull a slab of wood between the series of discs and to split the slab into strands, and a series of floating spacer rings on each shaft interspaced between the discs, the floating spacer rings being positioned on either side of the shafts adapted to permit the spacer rings to move away from the discs when a slab is being split therebetween. The method comprises inserting an end of a slab of wood between counter rotating discs, a first series of discs pushing first sections of the slab in one direction perpendicular to the direction of travel of the slab and perpendicular to the axes of the counter rotating discs, a second series of discs interfitting with the first series of discs pushing second sections of the slab between the first sections in an opposite direction to the one direction thus causing splitting to occur between first sections and second sections of the slab and forming strands, and guiding the first sections and second sections of the slab downstream of the counter rotating discs to issue as substantially straight strands from the counter rotating discs.

摘要： A novel process for slicing veneer comprises the steps of (1) submerging a piece of lumber in a water bath maintained at an elevated temperature for a period of time sufficient to eliminate excessive curling upon slicing, (2) slicing a single slice of veneer from the lumber, and (3) returning the lumber to the bath for an additional soak period before running the wood through the veneer slicer. Soaking between each slice produces greater uniformity in the slices, which are dried more easily with consumption of less energy.

摘要： Wood strands are oriented into parallelism with the aid of a number of adjacent, generally parallel spaces defined by relatively thin, elongated guide members having flat sides with the longitudinal axes of the guide members extending substantially parallel to a support surface below the spaces for receiving the parallel, oriented wood strands. Each pair of adjacent guide members are moved in opposite directions to turn strands which span the guide members until the strand falls into the space therebetween. In one form of the invention, certain of the guide members have yielding projections on their upper margins and the other guide members have positive projections on their upper margins, each yielding projection having a pair of inclined end edges and each positive projection having end edges generally perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the corresponding guide member. In another form of the invention, each guide member has spaced, yielding and positive projections with a positive projection being between each pair of adjacent yielding projections, respectively. In both forms of the invention, the yielding projections serve to raise wood strands which span the distance between three or more guide members; whereas, the positive projections operate to turn the strands until they fall between the guide members.

摘要： There is disclosed an apparatus for providing various decorative or textured surfaces on a material such as wood. Texturizing on a material surface is accomplished using a portable chain saw angled with respect to the material to be texturized with its cutting depth restrained. The apparatus includes a portable chain saw which has attached to it a pair of rollers, an edge alignment wheel and a pair of support bars. The support bars stabilize the chain saw blade, assist in angling the chain saw and engage the cutting depth. The rollers, assisted by the support bar, maintain the chain saw in angled orientation with respect to the material to be surfaced as the chain saw is passed over the material. The edge alignment wheel maintains proper alignment between the chain saw and the material to be surfaced. The apparatus is portable in design, providing a versatile means of texturizing large structural materials, especially wooden structural elements.

摘要： A tree cross-cutting blade has plurality of wedge-shaped ribs on the upper surface of and integral with the shear blade. The wedge-shaped ribs extend rearwardly from a bevelled cutting edge of the shear blade and distribute any splitting of the wood, due for example to a tree being frozen across the width of the tree and thus reduce the damage by splitting in a lengthwise direction along the tree. The wedge-shaped ribs may be curved, if the cutting blade cuts along an arcuate path, or straight if cutting is along a straight path. Two such tree cross-cutting blades may be used to cut a tree between them or one used to cut a tree against an anvil. If one is used to cut a tree against an anvil the shear blade may taper to increase in thickness away from the bevelled cutting edge to fell a tree in the cutting direction. The wedge-shaped ribs have pointed leading ends and are preferably triangular in cross-section.

摘要： In abstract, a preferred embodiment of the present invention comprises a logcutting or shearing apparatus adapted to cut logs into selected lengths. More particularly, the log cutting apparatus of the present invention is of the shear type and, accordingly, includes a horizontally reciprocally mounted shearing blade cooperable with a stationary shearing back to receive logs therebetween and to shear the same into preselected lengths by reciprocating the shearing blade back and forth relative to the cooperative shearing back. To appraise the operator of the length of logs being cut, the present invention provides a visual log length indicator with length markers thereon that extend outwardly from the log cutting apparatus and is particularly oriented so as to extend generally perpendicular to the plane of the shearing blade.
