A method and apparatus for splitting wood slabs substantially along the wood grain into longitudinal-grain wood strands are provided. The apparatus comprises a rotating disc splitter having a pair of parallel rotary shafts each having centered thereon and secured thereto a series of spaced apart circular discs, means for counter rotating the shafts to pull a slab of wood between the series of discs and to split the slab into strands, and a series of floating spacer rings on each shaft interspaced between the discs, the floating spacer rings being positioned on either side of the shafts adapted to permit the spacer rings to move away from the discs when a slab is being split therebetween. The method comprises inserting an end of a slab of wood between counter rotating discs, a first series of discs pushing first sections of the slab in one direction perpendicular to the direction of travel of the slab and perpendicular to the axes of the counter rotating discs, a second series of discs interfitting with the first series of discs pushing second sections of the slab between the first sections in an opposite direction to the one direction thus causing splitting to occur between first sections and second sections of the slab and forming strands, and guiding the first sections and second sections of the slab downstream of the counter rotating discs to issue as substantially straight strands from the counter rotating discs.

Disclosed is a device having four processing modules, arranged one behind another. Consecutive modules longitudinally cut wooden poles to narrower pieces. Each module has at least two corrugated feeding cylinders, at least one cutting apart wedge disc located behind them, optionally at least one fixed separating wedge located behind the cutting apart wedge disc, at least a cylinder distributing the longitudinally cut wooden poles and at least one cylinder crushing bundles of fibres of the longitudinally cut wood. There is a support and transport line situated along the workpiece transport route in each processing module. In case of a larger number of wedge discs in a processing module, the cutting apart wedge discs are situated on two opposite sides of the feed path and separated in a 2:1 ratio on the two sides of the feed path of the workpiece being cut apart.

A log splitting machine having a disk-like blade rotatable about an axis and able to split a log in a single 360.degree. rotation about said axis. The blade has two parts, each of which performs a different function. The first part of the blade has a spiral-shaped cutting edge designed to sufficiently penetrate into an end of a log to be split so as to form a lengthwise crack in the log. The second part of the blade has a widening edge designed to separate the log into two pieces along the lengthwise crack with further rotation of the blade. The log splitting machine also includes: an adjustable backstop for accommodating logs of different length; a frame for supporting the blade, log and adjustable backstop; an electric motor for powering the blade through a 360.degree. rotation; and a hood covering the blade and motor, and a deadman control switch for increased operator safety.

A method of converting lignocellulosic materials into various useful products, the method being controlled to produce the different products in accordance with the demand for them in the market. All of the original lignocellulosic material is used in this method. An important product obtained from this method is lumber engineered and dimensioned in accordance with the demand, and having predetermined characteristics.

A log splitter comprises a support structure having a first end, a second end, and an open center portion defined therebetweeen, a splitting device slidably coupled to the support structure, and a drive mechanism for driving movement of the splitting device through a splitting zone. The splitting device comprises an elongate beam having an outer surface, a first end, a second end, and an open center portion between the first end and the second end, and a splitting wedge coupled to the outer surface of the elongate beam and having at least one splitting surface formed thereon. The elongate beam is disposed within the open center portion of the support structure. The drive mechanism is disposed within the open center portion of the elongate beam, and is coupled on a first end to the first end of the support structure and on a second end to the second end of the elongate beam.

A kerfless slitter, capable of cutting various materials without generating chips or sawdust. The slitter includes a circular blade having a plurality of teeth spaced about its outer periphery and which contains a knife-edge centered along the mid plane of the blade in regard to its thickness. In practice, the blade is rotated at a peripheral speed that is equal to the linear speed of the work acted upon whereby each tooth is advanced along a cycloidal path of travel in reference to the work. Each tooth is arranged to enter the work ahead of the cutting line established by the teeth that have previously penetrated the work so that the cut is increased in length and in depth by means of a series of short slits.
