Abstract:
A normally—concealed edge joint at the front end of a vehicle hood can be sealed against corrosion by applying a bead of viscous sealant material along the length of the joint. The vehicle hood is maintained in an elevated position while the sealant bead is formed on the edge joint. Thereafter the hood is lowered by means of a special purpose implement that includes a hook designed to engage a striker on the hood undersurface. The implement prevents the technician from touching the hood, and possibly disturbing the sealant bead.
Abstract:
A method for texturing substrate surfaces and a substrate product, such as for computer disk drives. Microbump textured substrates are produced having a Rp value of about 20-200 Å and a ratio of Rmax:Rp of about 1.4 or less. In an exemplary embodiment, a microbump textured substrate is produced having colloidal particles on a surface thereof at a density of at least about 25 particles per 25 &mgr;m2, wherein the surface topography includes a Rp value of about 20-200 Å, a micro-roughness Rq of about 10 Å or less, and a ratio of Rmax:Rp of about 1.4 or less. An exemplary method includes first providing a substrate surface having a surface micro-roughness Rq of about 10 Å or less and depositing colloidal particles on the surface to provide a Rp value of about 20-200 Å and a ratio of Rmax:Rp of about 1.4 or less. In a further exemplary embodiment, the method increases the micro-roughness Rq, but to a value that is still less than about 10 Å with Rmax:Rp still of about 1.4 or less.
Abstract:
A method of confined synthesis of nanostructured material inside a mesoporous material. The method includes the step of providing mesoporous material having uniform and ordered mesopores. Next, a monolayer of charged functional group is attached on the pore surface of mesoporous host material by reacting with functional molecule. A oppositely-charged molecule is incorporated into the confined space of mesoporous material by either ion exchange or incipient wetness impregnation. Finally, the incorporated molecule is reduced or oxidized or further reacted with secondarily-incorporated molecule to form nanostructured material in mesoporous material.
Abstract:
A method for forming a pattern, including the steps of preparing a cliché having a recess thereon corresponding to a position of a pattern, filling one of resist and ink within the recess of the cliché, affixing a substrate on which the pattern is to be formed on a loading plate, aligning the loading plate on the cliché, attaching the substrate on the loading plate to the cliché, and separating the substrate on the loading plate from the cliché.
Abstract:
A unitary membrane for use in a pressing apparatus includes a pair of longitudinal edge portions and a semipermeable portion having a plurality of intercommunicating pores. The semipermeable portion is positioned between the pair of longitudinal edge portions. Wherein the unitary membrane includes a formed fabric and has a thickness less than about 0.1 inches. The semipermeable portion has a permeability greater than zero and less than about five CFM per square foot as measured by TAPPI test method TIP 0404-20. A method of making the unitary membrane includes the steps of providing a carrier fabric which is very permeable and forming a plurality of intercommunicating pores in the carrier fabric.
Abstract:
Porous films for medical use are provided comprising linear block polymers of polyurethane and urea containing hydrolyzable ester groups which are spaced along the carbon chain backbone of the film predetermined distances, so that upon hydrolysis of the ester groups fragments of the polymer are formed which have a size which can be secreted from the body of a mammal, the porous film including pores having an average pore size of up to 600 &mgr;m.
Abstract:
Method of applying a marking or image on a substrate which is provided with a coating by means of a sol-gel process. After the application of a layer of a sol-gel solution on the substrate, an ink which is compatible with the sol-gel is applied on the wet layer. The ink penetrates into the layer and then the layer is cured to form the coating.
Abstract:
A composite fiber made from natural and/or synthetic fibers having mineral compounds such as gemstones, colors and wavelengths, piezoelectric crystals and magnets whereby said fabrics can be placed against the body, such as the longitudinal lines of acupuncture points called meridians, the chakra system and/or circulatory systems for the purpose of transporting and channeling energy. The methods of combining the gemstones with the natural/synthetic fibers include encasing the mineral compounds within the natural/synthetic fibers by bonding the mineral compounds to the natural/synthetic fibers or laminating the mineral compound or compounds to the natural/synthetic fiber.
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for dispensing precise quantities of reagents is disclosed including a positive displacement syringe pump in series with a dispenser, such as an aerosol dispenser or solenoid valve dispenser. The pump is controlled by a stepper motor or the like to provide an incremental quantity or continuous flow of reagent to the dispenser. The pump and dispenser are operated in cooperation with one another such that the quantity and/or flow rate of liquid dispensed by the dispenser can be precisely metered substantially independently of the particular operating parameters of said dispenser to attain a desired flow rate, droplet size or mist quality, droplet frequency and/or droplet velocity.
Abstract:
The present invention is directed to methods and apparatus for controlling the quanatity of material dispensed from dispensing systems. In one aspect of the present invention, a dispensing system includes a weight scale upon which material is dispensed from a dispensing system during a calibration routine. The weight of the dispensed material is determined and compared with a target weight. If the weight of the dispensed material varies from the target weight by more than a predetermined amount, then characteristics of the dispensing system are adjusted, and the calibration routine is repeated.
