Abstract:
The invention relates to a process and device for scanning cells of a matrix-controlled display for the displaying of grey levels of a video signal, the scan being split up into sub-scans relating to each bit of column control words, characterized in that, when the coding of image does not activate the high-order bit, the processing sub-scan relating to this bit is allocated to the displaying of an additional item which corresponds to a bit of lower weight than the smallest weight of the column control word used when the condition is not fulfilled. The applications of the invention relate to matrix-controlled display devices using the principle of temporal modulation for the generation of halftones, especially plasma panels of the a.c. type with memory or d.c. type with memory.
Abstract:
An AC plasma display panel includes a plurality of parallel scan electrodes and a plurality of parallel sustain electrodes. Each of sustain electrodes is extended parallel to scan electrodes. Scan and sustain electrodes are positioned alternately so that each one of scan and sustain electrodes positions adjacent to and paired with the other of scan and sustain electrodes. Also, the panel includes a plurality of parallel data electrodes. The data electrodes extend substantially perpendicular to scan and sustain electrodes. Scan and sustain electrodes are applied with a certain current so that an electromagnetic noise generated in the electrodes can be cancelled by another.

The image display apparatus selects a signal level among a plurality of signal levels in accordance with a motion amount of an input image signal, where each signal level is expressed by an arbitrary combination of 0, W1, W2, . . . and WN and luminance weights W1, W2, . . . and WN are assigned to subfields.
Abstract:
A circuit for driving address electrodes of a plasma display panel system is disclosed. A data interfacing section outputs red, green and blue data arranged on 12 columns×107 rows to an address electrode driving IC. The address electrode driving IC has 4 input pins for receiving 4 bits of the red, green and blue data from the data interfacing section over 18 times and 72 output pins for outputting the received red, green and blue data. Accordingly, each of the address electrode driving ICs processes the red, green and blue data corresponding to a multiple of 12. That is, the red, green and blue data arranged on an identical row of the interfacing section having the red, green and blue data arranged in 12 columns×107 rows are inputted in an identical address electrode driving IC. Accordingly, the data interfacing section can execute an operation for outputting the red, green and blue data although all of 1280 units of the red, green and blue data are not inputted. Consequently, a storage capacity of the data interfacing section can be reduced and a cost of production of the flat panel display apparatus can be reduced.
Abstract:
A drive apparatus for a self light-emitting display unit accomplishes pseudo intermediate tone display and pseudo outline compensation while maintaining a high image quality. In executing dithering-based pseudo intermediate tone display and pseudo outline compensation data conversion on pixel data corresponding to the individual pixels of the self light-emitting display unit, dither coefficients to be added to the individual pieces of pixel data are changed field by field in this dithering process. Furthermore, the pseudo outline compensation data conversion performed is associated with each dither coefficient added in the dithering process.
Abstract:
In a display device in which each group of plural drive elements takes charge of the drive of plural picture elements (pixels) and the display luminance changes as the number of sustaining pulses changes that are supplied to a plasma display panel, a constant emission luminance characteristic is maintained by increasing the number of sustaining pulses for a larger load when the display load factor is large, and decreasing the number of sustaining pulses for a smaller load when the display load factor is small. When displaying a multi-tone image by a subfield drive method, a display area detect circuit allows the display of an image with constant luminance characteristic despite the variation of the display load factor, and prevents the deterioration of tone characteristic due to the subfield drive method, and further, a half tone display circuit allows the decrease of the bit number thereby simplifying the configuration of the display area detect circuit.
Abstract:
A drive apparatus capable of driving a self light-emitting display unit in an linear scanning mode based on video signals, obtained by interlaced scanning, while maintaining a high image quality. Two different image processes are performed on pixel data obtained by sampling interlaced scanning originated video signal, yielding image-processed pixel data and interpolation pixel data. The self light-emitting display unit is driven in an linear scanning mode by treating the image-processed pixel data as pixel drive data associated with one of an odd line and an even line of the self light-emitting display unit and treating the interpolation pixel data as pixel drive data associated with the other one of the odd line and even line.
Abstract:
A multi-color flat panel display of individually manufactured components operatively assembled to produce a multi-color image from a monochromatic source, the individually manufactured components include a color output assembly for converting a photon pattern produced by the monochromatic source to a corresponding electron pattern for excitation of color phosphors to display a corresponding optical image in color; and an optical collimator for preventing cross-talk between input section pixels of the monochromatic source and unassociated output section pixels of the color output assembly.
Abstract:
An A.C. Plasma Display Panel is operated in a video mode using the same signal train as applied to a conventional cathode ray tube terminal. For character generation, a selective erase technique is employed in which all cells in a raster line are discharged and then selectively erased in accordance with the video data to be displayed. To facilitate the erase operation, a line of cells in close proximity to the scan line being selectively erased is employed to provide adequate and uniform priming for the erase operation, and is synchronized to maintain its position with respect to the line being erased. A short plasma erase signal is utilized to fit within the scan rate of the display. The invention is also applicable to character generation in block or multi-line mode.
Abstract:
A compact interface unit for use with a scanning plasma display, has a random access memory unit for storing representation of characters to be displayed, and apparatus for cyclically energizing the dots of the matrix. New character codes are written into the random access memory unit during the time the dots of the display unit are energized. A column counter specifies which of the 5 columns is to be read out at any given time, and character generator ROM'S are provided to read out a 5.times.7 dot matrix for selected characters on a column-by-column basis, and a parallel-to-series counter unit converted to the ROM'S provide a serial data stream corresponding to the same dot column of characters in multiple rows. Two serial-to-parallel converters are provided for separating the serial data stream into control signals for controlling the energization of the rows of dots of the matrix unit. In the preferred embodiment, the interface is mounted on the back of the display device. The total depth of the interface is one and one-half inches.
