The physical variable related to the displacement is determined as a function of an electrical parameter varying as a function of the separation distance between the pair of thin planar members such as the electrical capacitance or resistance therebetween measured by a capacitance or ohm meter.

A measuring apparatus of a volume of a fluid injected from an injection valve. A fluid having a volume V is injected from an injection valve into an injection chamber containing a fluid, same kind as that of the injected fluid, and having a predetermined pressure and volume. A back pressure chamber is formed separately in the injection chamber with a parting plate having an effective under-pressure area A and a bellow sealed and connected, at one end thereof, to the parting plate. In the back pressure chamber a non-contact displacement sensor having a thermal compensation device is disposed with a clearance from the parting plate and the bellow and the back pressure chamber is filled with another fluid having same pressure as that of fluid in the injection chamber. By the injection of the fluid into the injection chamber, the parting plate moves toward the non-contact displacement sensor by a distance S which is equal to V/A. Distance S is detected by the non-contact displacement sensor. So the volume (V=AxS) of the fluid injected from the injection valve is measured easily and precisely without being affected by temperature variation.

A method of urine flow measurement where liquid in the form of a free-fall jet is collected in a collecting vessel and the vertical force produced by the collecting vessel on a measuring device, for example a scale or the like, is sensed, and the change in time of said force is utilized for obtaining a measure of the flow corresponding to the jet. The method is especially characterized in that the effect of the impulse of the jet on the sensed force is eliminated by deflecting the vertical flow constituted by the jet to a substantially horizontal flow by a rotating device before the liquid is caused to contact the vessel. The housing has an inlet and outlet which are in register with the inlet and outlet of the flow tube. The instrument disclosed herein is designed for measuring flow rates and densities of moving fluid streams, including liquids, gases, slurries, and fluids which contain solid materials. In one embodiment of this instrument, a conduit section, which has a 90 degree bend therein, is placed in a transfer line which carries the fluid stream to its use point. Defined within the conduit section is a chamber, which is located at the bend in the conduit. Installed within the chamber is a force measuring transducer and a piston, which is in contact with the diaphragm assembly of the transducer. In operation, part of the moving fluid is diverted into the chamber, to equalize fluid pressure across the diaphragm assembly of the transducer and the piston. This removes the effect of fluid pressure on the flow rate and density measurement, and allows the moving fluid to displace the piston by the force exerted by the fluid. The transducer registers the force and transmits it to a computer system, which converts it to a flow rate as a function of the force. A separate transducer measures the velocity of the stream and this measurement is converted to a density value.

The invention is an improved method and apparatus for determining the quantity of solids being conveyed in a slurry that is moving in a pipe. The method and apparatus combines a density-sensitive flowmeter (elbow meter) with a density-insensitive flowmeter (ultrasonic doppler flowmeter) to determine the quantity of solids conveyed in a slurry that is moving in a pipe. Velocity is determined by using a sonic flowmeter which is not affected by slurry specific gravity. Specific gravity is determined by dividing the signal from an elbow meter, which is a linear function of specific gravity, by the square of the sonic flowmeter signal. Numerous methods and apparatus are included to improve the accuracy of both the sonic flowmeter and the elbow meter.

Methods and apparatus for determining mass flow rate of a CO2 rich stream using dielectric permittivity are described. A method herein measures a dielectric permittivity of a CO2 rich stream; determines a density of the CO2 rich stream from the measured dielectric permittivity; determines a viscosity of the CO2 rich stream from the measured dielectric permittivity; measures a pressure drop of the CO2 rich stream flowing through a flow restriction; and determines mass flow rate of the CO2 rich stream using the measured pressure drop, the determined density, and the determined viscosity.
