The invention provides a slab transport tire roller which is easy to assemble and wherein a heat-insulating material is protected to render the roller reliably operable over a prolonged period of time. The tire roller comprises tires fixedly arranged respectively on outer peripheral portions of a pipe for passing cooling water therethrough, and a tubular protective sleeve fitted around the pipe between the tires with the heat-insulating material accommodated in the sleeve. The protective sleeve is engaged with the pipe or with at least one of the tires adjacent to the sleeve rotatably therewith. The protective sleeve can be composed of a tubular sleeve member and side plates attached to respective open ends of the sleeve member.

The conveyor roll device has a succession of first straight rolls spaced along the feed path for supporting a central region of the glass sheet, and a succession of second straight rolls spaced along the feed path for supporting a marginal edge portion of the glass sheet. The second straight rolls are vertically tilted through progressively differing angles, respectively, along the feed path with respect to the first straight rolls. The transport rods are provided in two groups which project outwardly from a respective mounting at the two lateral edges of the roller hearth furnace into the roller hearth furnace surface; the two groups of the transport rods are pivotal by a pivot movement via their respective mountings downwardly between linear forming elements, in particular forming rods, the joint upper tangential surface of which corresponds to the contour of the lower side of the arched glass sheet. Alternatively, at least one edge region of some transport rods may be pivoted upwardly to arch glass sheets or panes having one or two bends, for example bus windows or display case panes.

An insulating roller cover is now disclosed that provides a highly desirable combination of features. The cover is free from asbestos and is therefore of more desirable construction for handling and use. For the roller cover, at least substantially ceramic fiber is highly compressed, providing a dense and refractory, elevated temperature resistant insulating cover. The cover may itself serve as a load bearing surface; or may provide a foundation or protective media for annular discs or sleeve members made of various, load bearing materials. These load bearing materials may be unable to resist direct contact with the shaft due to thermal shock or the differences in their respective expansion and contraction rates. Where impregnant is utilized with the highly compressed fiber, such will often comprise a colloidal substituent.

A conveyor roll (20,21,20') for conveying heated glass sheets on a horizontal roller conveyor of a glass sheet processing system is disclosed as including a shaft (42,70,42) having a support (44,72,80) of aromatic polyamide fibers for engaging the conveyed glass sheets. Kevlar fibers are preferably utilized for the support (44,72,80) so as to have the requisite thermal stability and resistance to cutting by broken glass. One embodiment of the roll (20) has a helically wrapped support (44) comprising braided Kevlar rope or an outer Kevlar sleeve (64) and a central core (62) which may be longitudinally extending metallic or glass fiber strands (66) or a helical spring (68). Another embodiment of the conveyor roll (21) includes a ceramic roll shaft (70) of fused silica extending through an outer sleeve (72) of Kevlar fibers. A further embodiment of the conveyor roll (20') includes a support (80) having annular conveying discs (82) made of Kevlar fibers and spaced along the length of the shaft (42). In each roll embodiment (20,21,20') the associated Kevlar support (44,72,80) preferably has an outer surface (46,74,86) of the same diameter as drive surfaces (56) on end members (52) of the shaft.

A quench roll (20) for a glass sheet tempering system of the roller conveyor type includes a helical support (44) with a construction that does not mark conveyed glass sheets but which is nevertheless capable of withstanding breaking of glass sheets without being cut so as to require repair. The helical support (44) is wrapped about a shaft (42) of the roll (20) and includes a core (46) as well as a nonmetallic outer covering (50). The outer covering (50) is preferably a synthetic organic polymer such as silicone rubber or Teflon and, for best results, the covering has an outer sleeve (50a) of ceramic fibers. The core (46) is preferably metallic and made of wire strands (52) that facilitate wrapping thereof in the helical configuration. Spring end connections (54) disclosed prevent unwinding of the helical support (44) during glass sheet conveyance. The helical support (44) has particular utility with frictionally driven quench rolls and preferably has an outer diameter equal to the diameter of friction drive surfaces (78 ) of the roll.
