    摘要: Various designs of pluggable variable optical attenuator (VOA) are disclosed. A pluggable VOA has an optical fiber adaptor connected to an internal VOA via different fiber optical interface configurations. At least a pair of ports is provided to accept optical fibers or external optical fiber ferrules for optical pluggability. The VOA is controlled electronically or manually. To facilitate a control of the VOA via a hosting system, an electronic device and/or interface is provided. External commands take the control of the VOA and set an attenuation level within a specification when the pluggable variable optical attenuator device is connected to a hosting system.

According to one embodiment, an optical device or an assembly employs an array of micro lenses, an array of filters and a mirror or an array of mirrors all bonded onto a substrate to provide multiplexing or demultiplexing functions. To compensate for possible errors caused by some or all of these components, one or more compensatory optical plates are provided to respectively correct these errors. Depending on implementation, the compensatory optical plates may be designed differently to correct various errors.

As a result, devices employing the techniques provide small AOL and flexibility in adjustment and are amenable to small footprint, broad operating wavelength range, enhanced impact performance, lower cost, and easier manufacturing process.

    摘要: Techniques for designing optical couplers are disclosed. According to one aspect of the optical couplers, different from the prior art couplers, a holding tube (a sub-assembly) for holding an optical lens (e.g., a GRIN lens) and an optical filter (e.g., a thin film filter) is formed by concatenating two single tubes, one for accommodating the optical lens and the other for accommodating the optical filter. The two tubes are not required to have an identical dimension. As a result, inherent flexibilities are provided in the holding tube, especially the optical filter often comes in different sizes. Further, when the sub-assembly is inserted in a sleeve, only either one of the two tubes is secured to the sleeve so as to reduce a risk that, during a thermal condition change, any metal and glass material expansion will not cause the sub-assembly to be under stress that would otherwise be present when both of the tubes are secured to the sleeve. To reduce stress-related optical loss of the optical couplers, an epoxy adhesive is applied onto only a portion of an optical lens and a portion of a tube.

In accordance with one design, an optical filter configured to reflect a particular channel signal is positioned to receive a multiplexed signal at a small incident angle so as to minimize residuals of other signals in the channel signal. To further increase isolation from the other channel signals, another filter is introduced to transmit only the reflected channel signal, the another filter has a frequency response reciprocal to that of the original optical filter. One of the key advantages, benefits and objects of the designs is to increase channel signals separation efficiency by increasing isolation among separated channel signals.

    摘要: A fiber optical circulator includes a first collimator and a second collimator sandwiching a circulator core therebetween. The first collimator and the second collimator respectively define Port 1 and Port 2 thereof, and the first collimator further defines Port 3 thereof. The circulator core includes a first crystal and a second crystal at two ends respectively confronting the first collimator and the second collimator aside. The circulator core further includes a first group of two half-wavelength waveplates and a first Faraday rotator, and second subassembly a second group of two half-wavelength waveplates and a second Faraday rotator.     摘要: Disclosed herein is a wavelength-division multiplexing device with a unified passband. In particular, disclosed is a wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) device with at least a common port, a channel port, and a WDM filter. The common port is configured for optical communication of a multiplexed signal to the WDM filter. A demultiplexed signal of the multiplexed signal includes a first secondary demultiplexed signal within a first wavelength range and a second secondary demultiplexed signal within a second wavelength range, which are separated from each other by a third wavelength range. The first WDM filter has a single unified passband including the first wavelength range, the second wavelength range, and the third wavelength range, such that the first WDM filter is configured to pass the first secondary demultiplexed signal and the second secondary demultiplexed signal to the first channel port.
