Techniques for micro-optics alignment and assembly are described. By attaching a needle pin to an optical component to be assembled, the optical component can be placed and aligned within a limited space. After the aligned optical component is permanently bonded to a substrate or to another component, the needle pin is detached from the component. This technique allows a user to place and align a small optical component to a right position.

An optical sub-assembly includes an optical adapter with a main body that defines an internal chamber disposed between a front side and a rear side. The internal chamber includes a rear internal chamber with a sleeve section and a rear body section. A connector is disposed within the rear internal chamber. The connector includes a ferrule, a ferrule holder and a rear body. A sleeve holding the ferrule and an optical fiber extending into the ferrule are included. The ferrule extends from the ferrule holder and the sleeve is disposed over the ferrule with an interference fit such that the ferrule, ferrule holder and sleeve form an integrated part. The sleeve is disposed in the sleeve section of the rear internal chamber of the main body with an interference fit such that the ferrule, ferrule holder, sleeve and rear body position and align the optical fiber within the optical adapter.

The optical tap filter includes at least two parts optically engaged with a broadband thin film filter and taps out a monitoring signal from a communication signal according to a ratio set by the broadband thin film filter.

In particular, disclosed is a wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) device with at least a common port, a channel port, and a WDM filter. The common port is configured for optical communication of a multiplexed signal to the WDM filter. A demultiplexed signal of the multiplexed signal includes a first secondary demultiplexed signal within a first wavelength range and a second secondary demultiplexed signal within a second wavelength range, which are separated from each other by a third wavelength range. The first WDM filter has a single unified passband including the first wavelength range, the second wavelength range, and the third wavelength range, such that the first WDM filter is configured to pass the first secondary demultiplexed signal and the second secondary demultiplexed signal to the first channel port.

The variable optical attenuator includes an input optical fiber, an output optical fiber, a non-attenuating, transmission-type diffracting prism and a prism positioning system. The input optical fiber, the non-attenuating, transmission-type diffracting prism and the output optical fiber are optically arranged such that an optical path from the input core of the input optical fiber to the output core of the output optical fiber passes through the non-attenuating, transmission-type diffracting prism. The non-attenuating, transmission-type diffracting prism diffracts an optical signal propagating from the input optical fiber to the output optical fiber such that an input portion of the optical path is non-linear with an output portion of the optical path. The prism positioning system changes a pose of the non-attenuating, transmission-type diffracting prism within the optical path thereby attenuating the optical signal.

Filters shaped differently from those commonly used in WDM Mux/DeMux optical devices are described. Different from the prior art devices that commonly use filters shaped in cuboid, the filters in the embodiment of the present invention are shaped in parallelepiped. In other words, a cross section of such filter is not in parallelogram. According to one embodiment of the present invention, a filter is so cut that a cross section thereof presents a cutting angle not being 90 degrees. As a result, the filter is fully used in WDM Mux/DeMux optical devices. Such filters are advantageously used in compact optical modules.
