摘要: A process for directional solidification of a cast part comprises energizing a primary inductive coil coupled to a chamber having a mold containing a material; generating an electromagnetic field with the primary inductive coil within the chamber, wherein said electromagnetic field is partially attenuated by a susceptor coupled to said chamber between said primary inductive coil and said mold; determining a magnetic flux profile of the electromagnetic field after it passes through the susceptor; sensing a component of the magnetic flux in the interior of the susceptor proximate the mold; positioning a mobile secondary compensation coil within the chamber; generating a control field from a secondary compensation coil, wherein said control field controls said magnetic flux; and casting the material within the mold.

摘要: Disclosed is a method of making an integrally bladed rotor. According to the method, a titanium alloy rotor disk with 15-50% by volume of primary alpha grains with a grain size less than 10 μm and secondary alpha grains comprising widmanstatten grains with a grain size less than 1.0 μm is subjected to thermal processing. After thermal processing, a blade having an airfoil and a base is positioned such that a base surface is in contact with an outer rim surface of the disk. Heat, pressure, and motion are applied between the blade and the disk to friction weld the base surface to the disk outer rim surface.

摘要: An investment casting apparatus includes a furnace having an opening, a mold support, and a multi-axis actuator connected with the mold support and configured to retract the mold support from the opening with multiple-axis motion. An investment casting method includes withdrawing, with multiple-axis motion, a mold through the opening of the furnace to solidify a molten metal- or metalloid-based material in the mold. The apparatus and method can be used to form a cast article that has a body formed of the metal- or metalloid-based material. The body has a multi-textured, single crystal microstructure.

摘要: A powder processing machine includes a work bed, a powder deposition device operable to deposit powder in the work bed, at least one energy beam device operable to emit an energy beam with a variable beam power and direct the energy beam onto the work bed with a variable beam scan rate to melt and fuse regions of the powder, and a controller operable to dynamically control at least one of the beam power or the beam scan rate to change how the powder melts and fuses. The controller is configured to determine whether an instant set of process parameters falls within a defect condition or a non-defect condition and adjust at least one of the beam power or the beam scan rate responsive to the defect condition such that the instant set of process parameters falls within the non-defect condition.

摘要: A powder processing machine includes a work bed, a powder deposition device operable to deposit layers of powder in the work bed, an energy beam device operable to emit an energy beam with a variable beam power and scan the energy beam in a path across the powder in the work bed with a variable beam scan rate to melt and fuse regions of the powder, a sensor operable to detect process characteristics in the work bed by location in the work bed during scanning of the energy beam and produce signals representative of the process characteristics and locations, and a controller in communication with the sensor to receive the signals. The controller is configured to identify anomalies in the process characteristics and responsively adjust at least one of the beam power or the beam scan rate at the locations of the anomalies.

摘要: An abrasive coating comprising a plurality of first grit particles placed on a top surface of a substrate and spaced to provide channels for the removal of cut chips and rub debris and heat reduction. A plurality of second grit particles are placed between each of the first grit particles, and having a nominal size smaller than the first grit particles. A mixture of the second grit particles to the first grit particles comprises from about 75-98%. The second grit particles form a single layer or multiple layers and comprise height of 10 to 60% of that of the first grit particles. A matrix material is bonded to the top surface; the matrix material envelops the second grit particles and bonds to and partially surrounds the first grit particles. The first grit particles extend above the matrix material and the second grit particles relative to the top surface.
