A crankshaft for combustion engines has a number of components joined to each other. Each component comprises a counterweight, a portion of a main bearing journal, and a portion of a crank bearing journal. Adjacent components are so arranged that their crank bearing journal portions are connected to each other to form a complete crank bearing journal, and their main bearing journal portions are secured to each other to form a complete main bearing journal. One of each pair of portions is longer than the other; and oil ducts extend through cavities in the components but do not communicate with those cavities. Instead, the ends of the ducts open through the journal bearing surfaces, and specifically through the longer of the two journal portions so that the opening of the ducts can be central of the journal and still not interfere with the joint between the components.

An internal combustion engine includes a crankshaft and a balancer shaft. The shafts are rotationally linked to one another, and the crankshaft is linked to a piston. The shafts carry weights to minimize the vibrations caused by the reciprocating motion of the piston. A reinforcing member has two enclosing portions, one for a bearing of each of the shafts, and integrally joins both of said enclosing portions. The reinforcing member is cast into the crankcase wall. Its material is stronger than the material of which the crankcase wall is made. Cracking and wearing of the crankcase wall, especially in the region between the two shafts, is reduced or eliminated, and the wall can be made thinner, and more reliably without cavities.

In order to improve the fuel economy of a vehicle engine, its cylinders are divided into two groups, which are operable independently of each other. The fuel system is adapted to supply either, or both groups with fuel. The crank shaft of one cylinder group is connectable to the power take-off shaft by means of conventional transmission and clutch means, while the crank shaft of the other cylinder group is connectable to the power take-off shaft by way of a transmission arrangement running in parallel to the row of cylinders, and comprising a shaft. The auxiliaries of the engine are mounted at the end of the engine remote from the power take-off shaft, and can be driven from either group of cylinders by way of the transmission arrangement.

Internal combustion engines having a split crankshaft are disclosed. The engines may also have non-circular, preferably rectangular, cross-section pistons and cylinders. The pistons may include a skirt with a field of pockets that provide a ringless, non-lubricated, seal equivalent. The pistons also may have a domed piston head with depressions thereon to facilitate the movement of air/charge in the cylinder. The engines also may use multi-stage poppet valves in lieu of conventional poppet valves. The engines may use the pumping motion of the engine piston to supercharge the cylinder with air/charge. The engines also may operate in an inverted orientation in which the piston is closer to the local gravitationally dominant terrestrial body's center of gravity at top dead center position than at bottom dead center position.
