An improved automobile safety device of the type having a shoulder safety belt extending diagonally across the upper body of a passenger and connected to a slide displaceable in a guide attached to the automobile frame. The belt is attached to the slide by a belt lock rigidly fastened to the slide, which assumes a spatially defined position when the slide is in the passenger-restraining position. An electric switch having an actuating element for effecting either a first switching state or a second switching state is attached to the vehicle body and positioned such that the belt lock engages the actuating element only when the slide is in the restraining position. The switch assumes the first switching state when the belt lock and slide are in the restraining position, and assumes the second switching state when the lock and slide are moved away from the restraining position.

A runner gear mounted on the runner piece engages with a linear guide gear which is installed in the guide rail and a plurality of openings formed in a flexible tape. Flexible tape is driven in a direction of the length of the guide rail by means of a driving mechanism and when the flexible tape is driven, the running gear rolls along the guide gear to thereby cause the runner piece and the belt to move so that the belt approaches or move away from the passenger.

A shoulder belt leading from a retractor on the vehicle roof and a lap belt leading from a retractor on the door are buckled to each other at a location generally inboard of the seat. A tongue on one of the belts passes through a D-ring fastened to the vehicle on the inboard side of the seat, the D-ring being large enough to allow the tongue to pass readily through it. The belts can be unbuckled from each other and will be wound into the retractors for easy emergency escape of a passenger.

The seatbelt system comprises command switch means for generating seatbelt activation and deactivation signals, switch means for detecting the position of a seatbelt, and a control circuit for controlling the motor. The safety arrangement for a motor vehicle incorporates primary restraint arrangement having a three-point seat-belt (3) and optionally one or more air-bags (19,22). A secondary restraint system is provided in the form of a two-point seat-belt (13). A sensor senses when the two-point seat-belt (13) is in use and provides a signal to a control unit (17) which adjusts the restraining effect provided by the primary restraint arrangement so that the overall restraining effect is the same regardless of whether the two-point seat-belt is, or is not, used. The use of the two-point seat-belt (13) provides enhanced occupant protection especially in a side-impact or rollover situation.
