A broad-spectrum harmonic filter is developed. This filter is to be connected in series ahead of the load which generates harmonics. This filter basically consists of 3 fixed elements, i.e. a series reactor and a shunt reactor in series with a capacitor. It can function to completely filter out 5th harmonic current in 3 phase systems (or 3rd harmonic current in single phase systems) and to reduce other harmonic components by high percentages say, typically close to 70%. Thus the portions of various harmonics flowing toward the electrical power source can be held within acceptable limits. By adjusting these two reactors and the capacitor, a desirable and controllable filtering performance can be achieved. A satisfactory performance of the filter and the electrical system can be expected by use of this invented filter with only 3 major elements. A voltage compensator, a reactor of nullnegative valuenull is recommended to compensate for the harmonic voltage distortion across the series reactor (or the filter), if necessary, or to compensate for the voltage drops under power frequency operations.

A waveform correction filter is connected into an alternating current power line to absorb and remove various forms of power pollution, including high-frequency spikes, surges and other forms of high-frequency oscillations, such as those which result from switching inductive loads on and off. The waveform correction filter of the invention includes a fuse and a coaxial amorphous toroidal inductor connected between a power line and neutral with a low-pass filter connected in series with the fuse and coaxial amorphous toroidal inductor. The filter includes a capacitor, a varistor connected in parallel with said capacitor, and a magnetic core inductor connected in series with each other and in parallel with the capacitor and said varistor. A lamp may be connected in series with the resistor and the magnetic core inductor or across the resistor. Various arrangements are shown for connecting a plurality of the waveform correction filters into single phase or three-phase Wine or delta circuits.

The filter incorporates a variable inductor comprising a main winding, auxiliary windings and switching circuitry associated with each auxiliary winding. The auxiliary windings are arranged to act in inductive series with respect to the main winding, and the switching circuitry is used to selectively connect the auxiliary windings in electrical series with the main winding, so allowing the inductance of the inductor to be varied. To achieve enhanced variability of the inductance, each auxiliary winding has a number of turns substantially equal to x2(nnull1) where n is a positive integer corresponding to the position of each auxiliary winding in the inductive series of auxiliary windings and x is also a positive integer. Disclosed is a new single-phase passive harmonic filter for one or more nonlinear loads. The filter improves the total system performance by drastically reducing the line side current harmonics generated by nonlinear loads. The filter includes two inductive portions across one of which is connected a tuning capacitor. The parallel combination of one inductive portion with the tuning capacitor forms a series tuned filter configuration while the second inductive portion is used for harmonic attenuation. A shunt capacitor is employed for shunting higher order harmonic components. A single-phase passive voltage regulator provides the needed voltage bucking to prevent over voltage at the load terminals of the filter. The filter provides an alternate path for the harmonic currents generated by nonlinear loads. The over voltage caused by the increased capacitive reactance is controlled by either capacitor switching or by the use of the passive voltage regulator or a combination of the two. Capacitor switching is dependent upon load conditions.

The transformer further include a group of multiple-phase secondary windings with phase differences with respect to each other and which are connected to voltage source type power converter units. The voltage source type power converter units are operated with the phase differences. Accordingly, the construction of the multiplexing phase-shifting transformer is simple, and fundamental electric variables can be controlled by a simple phase controlling operation. In addition, a higher harmonic defect of the AC system can be reduced, and the DC voltage can be easily raised.
