Controlled exhaust gas recycling can be accomplished by a pneumatically actuated valve which restricts the flow of exhaust gas from an exhaust manifold of an internal combustion engine to the intake manifold. Exhaust gas may be removed from the manifold and enters a pressure chamber through a reduction means, such as an aperture in a plate. The effective cross-sectional area of hydrodynamic flow of the reduction means is chosen to be greater than the effective cross-sectional area of hydrodynamic flow of the valve. The valve is actuated by a diaphragm control means which is coupled to the intake and exhaust manifold. The diaphragm control means controls the amount of partial pressure applied to the pneumatically actuated valve according to the exhaust pressure from the exhaust manifold. Thus, the ratio of exhaust gas recycled through the internal combustion engine relative to the amount of engine air intake, decreases as the air intake volume increases, such as when the engine is under high loads or operating at high rates (RPM).

An internal combustion engine is provided with an EGR system and a system for catalytic coversion of a rich air-fuel mixture into a reformed combustible gaseous mixture rich with free hydrogen. During a low or medium engine load engine operation, the engine is operated solely by an air-gasoline mixture and with an exhaust gas recirculation at a rate not higher than a predetermined first EGR rate. During a high engine load engine operation, the reformed combustible gaseous mixture is added to the air-gasoline mixture supply and simultaneously the exhaust gas recirculation is increased to a rate higher than the predetermined first EGR rate to increase the engine output, improve the engine drivability and improve the consumption of the reformed combustible gaseous mixture. The intake manifold vacuum is electrically detected to determine the load on the engine and to control valves associated with the EGR system and reformed gas supply system.

The pressure-comparing valve includes a pair of interlocked diaphragms actuated in opposed relationship interacting with a biased valve member in the pressure-signal passage, one of the interlocked diaphragms being actuated by the venturi vacuum pressure created by the quantity of air being taken into the engine through the carburetor and the other of the diaphragms being actuated by the adjusted back pressure and tending to open the valve and bleed-off pressure in the pressure-signal passage. A booster valve is preferably used to amplify the venturi vacuum pressure and a pressure-changeover valve, sensitive to operating conditions of the engine, may be disposed in the pressure-signal passage.

The shut-off valve is normally biased to a closed position and it is opened to permit recirculation in response to a signal received from a fluidic NOR gate which operates in accordance with position of a carburetor throttle, engine speed and engine temperature. The fluidic amplifier includes a power jet chamber receiving a supply of exhaust and a vent chamber in fluid communication with a venturi disposed in the exhaust manifold, a receiver chamber and a pair of control jets. One of the control jets may be in fluid communication with the intake manifold or with a carburetor venturi. The other control jet may be open to atmospheric pressure compensated for the effect of changes in air density or engine speed.
