    摘要: A mechanical force amplifier is disclosed including a gas-containing cylinder having one fixed end and one movable end determined by the position of an output power piston. A cold temperature zone and a hot temperature zone are maintained along the axis of the cylinder, the cold zone being adjacent the fixed end and the hot zone being adjacent the movable end. The power piston is resiliently urged toward the fixed end so as to compress the gas.A displacement piston is positionable along the axis of the cylinder within the cold zone and the hot zone and is designed to allow the gas to flow around it as the piston is moved. The displacement piston and the power piston are completely uncoupled from movement with each other except through the gas.

    摘要: A highly efficient regenerative reciprocating internal combustion engine is disclosed. The regenerator captures the unutilized heat normally expelled with the exhaust products of such an engine and transfers it to fresh working fluid at the appropriate time in the next engine operating cycle to reduce the quantity of fuel which must be burned, resulting in an increase in engine efficiency. This is accomplished through the use of a permeable, movable heat exchanger located between the piston and the cylinder head. This regenerative technique can be applied to both two and four stroke Diesel cycle and Otto cycle engines. It can also be employed in ported (i.e. valveless) engines. The hot combustion region can be located between the cylinder head and the regenerator or between the piston and the regenerator. These regenerative devices and processes greatly improve the thermal efficiency of conventional internal combustion engines, while providing power outputs similar to conventional engines of the same displacement, greatly reducing hydrocarbon and carbon monoxide emissions, and utilizing much the same hardware. In addition, the regenerative internal combustion engine places reduced heat loads on engine components, is operable at lower peak temperatures (with thermal efficiencies and power still comparable to conventional engines), and is better able to utilize high temperature materials which can reduce heat loss to engine cooling systems.

    摘要: A seal mechanism for a Stirling engine has an upper and lower piston ring mounted on a displacer piston with a space therebetween and at least one piston ring mounted on a power piston. The seals produced by the piston rings of the displacer piston are given directionality in opposite directions so that the pressure within the space between the upper and lower piston rings is always higher or lower than the pressure within the expansion space and the compression space of the engine. In a preferred embodiment, the displacer piston rings each comprise two loosely-fitting outer rings which surround an inner ring. Air vents are formed in one surface of each of the inner rings between the center and the outer surface of the inner ring. The inner rings of the upper and lower piston rings are oriented so that the air vents face in opposite directions. Means for imparting directionality in the same direction to the seals produced by the power piston rings may also be provided.

    摘要: An improved Stirling engine has a piston and a crosshead slidably disposed inside a cylinder and secured to one another by a piston rod so as to reciprocate as a single body with a space formed between the crosshead and the piston. An oil-deflecting guard for deflecting oil which is scattered by the movement of the crosshead is disposed between the crosshead and the piston and is supported so as to move with the crosshead. A first oil-absorbing member for absorbing oil which enters the space above the oil-deflecting guard is disposed on the oil-deflecting guard on the piston side thereof. A second oil-absorbing member is disposed between the first oil-absorbing member and the piston with a space therebetween. The space between the crosshead and the piston can be connected with the inside of a crankcase by oil drainage holes.

    摘要: A hot air solar engine has two heat engines at opposing ends of a common piston assembly to provide alternate cooperative expansion and compression action. Each of the heat engines has a compressor and an expander wherein a single dual-diameter piston head serves as the piston portion of each. The hot air solar engine further includes a solar collector having positioning means for maintaining alignment with the sun's position. The solar collector has a paraboloid cylinder shaped reflector and a heat exchanger assembly disposed about the focal line of the reflector for receiving concentrated sunlight. The heat exchanger assembly includes first and second heat exchangers cooperating with the first and second heat engines. The heat exchangers are comprised of multiple parallel tubes each having a recuperator portion located within a recuperator chamber which receives heated air exhausted by the heat engines, and a collector portion located within a collector chamber equidistant from the focal line of the reflector which receives heat from the concentrated solar radiation. The recuperator chamber is contiguous to the collector chamber to increase solar efficiency, and the heat engines and heat exchanger assembly use environmental air as the working fluid allowing open system operation on an air-standard thermodynamic cycle. Fuel may be supplied to further heat the exhaust air through combustion as it is supplied to the recuperator chamber, thus permitting operation without sunlight.
