    摘要: Binder compositions are provided which include a mineral binder and a silicon-containing carbon black. The silicon-containing carbon black can have attached an ionic or ionizable organic group or can be oxidized. Silicon-containing carbon blacks may be prepared by a furnace method. The binder compositions of the present invention have improved coloring and weathering properties in comparison to binder compositions prepared with conventional carbon blacks. Furthermore, the binder compositions that incorporate silicon-containing carbon blacks having ionic or ionizable organic groups attached exhibit excellent dispersibility, even in pelletized form. Articles such as roofing tiles can be prepared from the binder compositions. Also contemplated is a method of improving the color stability of a mineral binder composition. Silicon-containing carbon blacks as described above are added to the mineral binder composition.

    摘要: Disclosed are improved compositions useful in providing a conductive layer or coating on or within a substrate. The compositions contain elemental carbon and a polymeric matrix or binder. The improvement comprises employing a unique ground calcined, coal-based coke which approaches graphite in terms of its performance as a conductive additive or pigment but does not possess the disadvantages associated with the use of graphite.The unique coke employed in the compositions and methods of the present invention has a significant level of graphitic structure. This level of graphitization can be most easily recognized by utilizing x-ray powder diffraction. More specifically, when the value of E.sub.c, or the inverse peak width (of the 002 peak), is measured for this material using Mo K.alpha. radiation (.lambda.=0.71 .ANG.), the value is in the range of about 27 to about 80, and preferably about 28 to about 75.The final compositions employ a polymer resin or matrix system as a binder which, when allowed to dry or cure, in situ, is water-permeable. They are useful as cathodic protection coatings for concrete and other building materials which are reinforced with low carbon steels and the like.The invention also relates to the method of applying the compositions to the reinforced substrate, and the resulting coated articles.

    摘要: The invention provides a setable composition consisting of a bonding material (e.g. cement) and an aggregate which aggregate contains a quantity of relatively large electrically conductive particulate material and a quantity of relatively small electrically conductive particulate material. In one form the conductive material is gap-graded. In this form if calcined oil coke and acetylene black is used concretes of resistivities of the order of 25.OMEGA. ohm-centimeter may be obtained. In another form, the conductive material includes quantities of conductive material ranging in size between the relatively large and the relatively small conductive material. In this form, where the conductive material is calcined oil coke forming the entire aggregate and the size distribution of the coke is such that the spectrum of size is in accordance with one of the National Standards relating to the spectrum of particle sizes recommended for conventional aggregates in cementitious compositions, concretes having resistivities at least as low as 2.OMEGA. centimeter may be obtained, whilst still providing satisfactory mechanical strengths.
