The single fabric layers provide a relatively a effective manner of reducing air permeability within the entire fabric article by decreasing the possibility of yarn shifting upon inflation of the inflatable fabric. Alternatively, the presence of at least a second single fabric layer area adjacent to the first and separated by and narrow double fabric layer area can further reduce the possibility of yarn shifting in the first single fabric layer area. Such a fabric may be utilized in numerous and various applications wherein fabric inflation is desired or necessary. In particular, the inventive fabric may be incorporated within an airbag cushion.

The linear joining portions include a linear base, curved portions and swelling portions. Each of the curved portions is connected to the base and curvilinearly extends and bends toward the respective base thereof. The swelling portions are arranged at tip ends of the curved portions to smoothly connect outer peripheral edges thereof to outer peripheral edges of the curved portions. With this airbag, stress concentration is reduced around the swelling portions and the curved portions at the time of development and expansion. Thus, the linear joining portions can be arranged without causing breakage of the peripheral wall during development and expansion, and reduction in volume and expansion area held down as much as possible.

Vehicle air bags are constructed of fabric produced according to improved methodology. The fabric, which may be coated or uncoated, is woven on a rapier loom machine without size. Since size is not used, the invention provides several methods to reduce chafing of the unprotected yarn during the weaving process. For example, the yarn is preferably of a type having a relatively large number of evenly-spaced nodes of entanglement. The warp ends are preferably beamed at a ratio of no greater than two ends per dent of the beaming comb. At least six (6) weaving harnesses are preferably used on the loom as the fabric is being produced. Because size is eliminated, the fabric does not have to be scoured prior to use. As a result, the air permeability of the fabric remains naturally low and fabric stiffness is reduced.

The multilayer film enables production of gas-tight multilayer laminates which exhibit an excellent peel resistance combined with a low weight and/or thickness. Further, a multilayer laminate and an inflatable airbag that include a fabric layer adhered to the multilayer film, as well as methods of manufacturing are described.

A method for manufacturing a one-piece woven (OPW) air bag includes method for manufacturing an OPW airbag. The method includes providing yarns, warping the yarns on at least one beam of a loom, and simultaneously weaving yarns into a fabric air bag structure having two layer portions defining an inflatable volume and single layer portions forming seams delimiting the inflatable volume. A plurality of the yarns overlay one another to form nonwoven alignment elements in at least one of the single layer portions. The air bag structure is cut to define the OPW air bag. The alignment elements are aligned with alignment elements on a panel. The air bag structure is sewn to the panel with the alignment elements aligned with one another.
