Cyclic polydiorganosiloxanes, in particular, cyclic trisiloxanes are continuously prepared from mixed polydiorganosiloxane, the starting material, by subjecting them to thermal cracking and rectification in a reactor composed of a column, vertically held, comprising a catalyst zone at the lower part in which the thermal cracking takes place to produce cyclic polydiorganosiloxanes and a rectification zone at the upper part in which the cyclic polydiorganosiloxanes are rectified into several fractions and a still positioned below the column. The cyclic polydiorganosiloxanes have structures different from the starting polydiorganosiloxanes.

The disclosed equilibrated mixtures of organopolysiloxanes containing sulfonic acid groups have the average unit formula ##EQU1## In this formula, b has a value of from 0 to 50, preferably 0 to 10; A IS A NUMERAL WHICH IS SELECTED SO THAT THE AVERAGE UNIT MOLECULE COMPRISES 2 TO 100, PREFERABLY 4 TO 50 SILICON ATOMS AND THE RATIO OF R.sup.3 groups which are not linked to trifunctional Si-atoms to R.sup.3 groups which are linked to trifunctional Si-atoms is at least 4;R.sup.3 is alkyl, substituted alkyl, aryl or substituted aryl; andX is halogen, ##EQU2## wherein R.sup.1 is alkyl, aryl or alkaryl, or ##EQU3## wherein R.sup.4 is divalent hydrocarbon, at least 3% of X constituting said ##EQU4## or ##EQU5## groups, the number of said ##EQU6## groups in the unit not exceeding 10. The novel equilibrated mixtures of sulfonic acid groups containing organopolysiloxanes may be directly used as equilibration and polymerization catalysts for organopolysiloxane systems. They also serve as intermediaries in the production of foam stabilizers. Numerous other uses for the novel compounds are disclosed in the application.

The invention comprises sulphate-containing siloxanes of the formulae wherein R1 is Cl-6 alkyl radical or trialkylsilyl radical, at least 50% of R1 consisting of the latter, R is a monovalent hydrocarbon or halohydrocarbon radical, M is an alkylene radical which bridges the silicon and oxygen atoms through at least three carbon atoms, each X is a hydrogen atom, or one equivalent of a metal or NHR13, wherein R1 is a hydrogen atom or a hydrocarbon or substituted hydrocarbon radical; and x=0 to 1, y=2 to 3, z=1 to 10 and x+y=3. R is preferably an C1- 4 alkyl radical, and M is preferably (CH2)3 or (CH2)4. Specified X radicals are Na, K, Ca, Al, Zr and those derived from ammonia, hydrazine, amines, polyamines, alkanol amines, heterocyclic amines and quaternary ammonium compounds; many examples are given. Compounds of Formulae (I) and (II) are prepared by reacting an organo - silicon compound RxYySi(MOCOR)4-(x+y)with chlorosulphonic acid yielding a compound of the unit formula this is reacted with a hexa-alkyl disiloxane, R3SiOSiR3, and the R3SiY produced distilled off yielding SiRx(R3SiO)y(MO-SO2.OSiR3) which is further heated giving compounds of Formula (II). The products are subjected to hydrolysis or alcoholysis optionally followed by neutralization. A typical Example (1) describes the preparation of and the disiloxane obtained by replacing one (CH3)Si group by C2H5. Uses.-In lacquers and varnishes as spreading agents, antistatic agents, preventing glass fogging, wetting agent, in polyurethane foams, glass fibre finishing agents.
