Abstract: A method for producing captive washer wheel nuts. The washer and nut body are formed as a single piece, greatly simplifying and reducing the number of separate manufacturing steps, such as threading and forming bearing surfaces on the washer and nut body. An axially symmetric frusto-conical groove at an oblique angle to the axis of symmetry is formed in the nut-washer blank. The groove is sufficiently deep to be closer to the axis of symmetry than a small-radius concave feature on the underside of the washer. Upon application of axial compression, the washer separates from the nut body along a frusto-conical fracture surface defined between the bottom of the groove and the concave feature on the washer. The orientation of this fractured surface causes the washer to be captured to the nut body.

Abstract: An apparatus particularly useful for securing a deformable nut having a hole to carrier material, such as a sheet-metal panel, is disclosed. Securement of the nut to the panel is made employing essentially a one-step procedure to form a hole in the panel and to secure the nut to the panel at the panel hole. The securement procedure generates essentially no panel-material waste. Various elements of the apparatus cooperate to secure the nut to the panel. On the apparatus, a ram initially causes a nut guide to secure the panel to the apparatus, and eventually causes a piercing punch to be advanced along a path toward a receiving punch. The latter action causes the panel to be pierced. Further advancement of the ram toward a base of the apparatus causes portions of the panel adjacent the pierced portion to be urged or otherwise drawn into the nut hole, and eventually causes the nut to deform. The latter action causes the nut to be secured to the panel.

Abstract: A strip of fasteners such as pierce nuts is formed from a metal blank with no scrap resulting from the provision of a spacing between adjacent nut bodies, and without the difficulty and expense incident to attaching nut bodies to connecting elements. The body portion of a laterally flanged blank is severed in the transverse direction to separate nut bodies from the blank without fracturing the flanges. The flanges are severed in the longitudinal direction to form severed longitudinally extending flange segments integral at both ends with unsevered flange segments. When the flanges are straightened, the stretching of the severed flange segments resulting from shearing provides a spacing between adjacent nut bodies in the strip. The strip includes spaced apart nut bodies interconnected by continuous lateral flanges. The flanges include unsevered lateral flange segments integral with both sides of each nut body, and severed flange segments integral at both ends with the unsevered flange segments. Elongation of the severed flange segments provides spacing between adjacent nut bodies.

Abstract: A method for manufacturing a self-locking spring nut is disclosed herein. In this method, a spring nut is tapped in its stretched or compressed condition, where a lead or pitch of the spring nut of a helical form is increased or decreased, say 0.5 to 6%. Accordingly, when a bolt is inserted into the spring nut thus prepared, then threads on the bolt undergo a compressive or tensile stress by the spring nut.As a result, the spring nut may be locked on a bolt in any position. This method utilizes an elasticity of the spring nut to be locked on the bolt, rather than interference between the female and the male threads on the nut and bolt, respectively, for instance, interference caused by deforming the configuration of threads or changing a pitch of a male thread relative to that of a female thread. Accordingly, the self-locking nut of the invention may be repeatedly used, without being damaged. The pitch of the spring nut of a helical form, however, should differ from the pitch of a tapped or female thread provided in the inner surface of the spring nut.

Abstract: A wheel nut having wrench flats extending parallel to a central threaded aperture is sheathed by a sheet metal cap which extends down the sides and covers one end of the nut. The end of the cap may extend straight across the end of the nut or may alternatively be domed to surround a volume extending beyond the end. The cap is welded to the nut at either a ring of points or a continuous ring extending around the nut end. Alternatively, the nut may have a radially extending skirt between its ends and the cap may be welded to the laterally extending sides of the skirt. These resistance welded joinders are formed by supporting the cap in loose assembly with the nut in an electrically conductive fixture, bringing a tubular electrode into pressured contact with the uncapped end of the nut and passing an extremely short pulse of high electric current through the contacting surface of the cap and nut end using a capacitive discharge welding circuit.

Abstract: A nut having a threaded bore including a cylindrical threaded portion through one end of the nut and a conical threaded portion opening through the opposed end of the nut for receiving the unthreaded portion of a bolt shank, without binding.
