The invention relates to the provision of a mechanical joint, a method for forming the same and items made incorporating the joint. The joint includes a first member with an opening which is in an initially sufficiently wide condition to receive therein a second member, insert or former. When the same is positioned correctly the opening is moved to a condition whereby the insert, second member or former is trapped in the opening. By this method the second and first members are connected either directly or via connection to the insert or former. Items including a plurality of said joints at the required locations can be made which are strong and sturdy and with relatively straightforward manufacturing requirements.

An outlet for connecting spray nozzles, drop tubes or the like to an irrigation pipe comprising a generally cylindrical-shaped member having an inner end, an outer end, an annular shoulder protruding outwardly therefrom between the inner and outer ends, and an internally threaded bore extending therethrough. When the outlet is positioned in an opening formed in an irrigation pipe, the annular shoulder of the outlet is in engagement with the exterior surface of the pipe. A machine is also disclosed for creating a plurality of horizontally spaced-apart bulged areas in the pipe with each of the bulged areas having a flat surface thereon. The machine includes a bulging punch which creates the bulged areas in the pipe. The machine further includes a punch for creating an outlet opening in the flat surface of the bulged area. The machine also includes means for installing the outlet in the opening and to flare the inner end of the outlet into mechanical engagement with the interior surface of the pipe around the opening created therein.

An assembly is formed of two parts sleeved together in a cruciform arrangement, namely an at least locally cylindrical part and a tubular part having a transverse hole into which the cylindrical part is forcibly inserted. To brace internally the wall of the tubular part on the side from which the cylindrical part is inserted, before such insertion a spacer is inserted into the tubular part through the hole in it and thereafter extends along a portion of the perimeter of the hole. The edge of the first plastic element is pressed against a curved butting face of a pressure body placed in the second plastic element at the opening thereof and the edge of the first plastic element along the butting face is pushed radially outwardly and over the edge of the opening of the second plastic element. The edges of both plastic elements are pressed together by exerting pressure on both sides of the edges. Alternatively, use is made of a sealing ring at least partially between the edges.

A weldless and solderless fluid distribution piping system incorporating solely mechanical retention of one or more inlet/outlet fittings in holes in the side wall of a pipe. In each case, the fitting has at one end a fishmouth configuration and an annular bead, and this end end is first inserted into the hole in the pipe and the bead thereafter forcibly expanded into tight mechanical and sealing relationship with the edges of the hole. A deformable and resilient sealing gasket can optionally be interposed between the fitting and pipe to provide an improved seal, if desired. Novel apparati and a method for attaching such fittings to a pipe are also disclosed.

Methods of forming joints between bars of materials such as mild steel are disclosed. In one method, the bars are arranged to lie in generally parallel planes but with their axes at an angle to one another, and a plastically-deformable tubular stub of round or square cross-section is disposed between the bars with its axis substantially intersecting the axes of the bars, which are then pressed together to deform the stub partially around the two bars. In a second method, a bar is arranged in a T-formation with a hollow member, two opposed regions at the end of the tubular member are deformed inwardly and back along the member axis, and the bar is then pressed into the groove so-formed at the end of the member, to deform the end portion partially around the bar. Heat may be used, in the former case on the stub and in the latter case on the tubular member, so that after completion of the joint the heated stub or tubular member will cool and contract, firmly to grip the or each bar.

A method of joining tubular elements to provide fluid tight connections is disclosed in which the mating portions of the joined tubes are preformed so as to be able to be located with respect to each other prior to soldering, brazing, or other joining process. The preforming operations involve the punching or shearing of an opening in the sidewall of a body tube to which a branching tube is to be joined, in which shearing operation a pair of cusps or tabs are formed at opposite locations on either side of the sheared hole. The punching or shearing is carried out by a punch tool moved to intercept a segment of the body tube sidewall to form an opening, with portions of the tubing wall on either side of the opening formed remaining, these portions being displaced upwardly by the tool to provide the locating cusps or tabs at the periphery of the opening so-formed. The end of the branch tube is initially slotted prior to being formed by means of a swaging tool into a saddle shape suitably formed to snap over the body tube section with the tabs cooperating with the interior of the branch tube to provide a locating function such as to enable correct positioning of the tube over the opening punched in the body tube sidewall. Once in position, the tubes are then joined in position by conventional soldering, brazing, or other suitable joining process.

A method of crushing and bending an end section or an intermediate section of a tube comprises placing in a cradle of a die of a press a part of the tube including the section, and moving a punch of the press towards the die such that the section and the remainder of the tube part are bent one relatively to the other and one wall portion of the section is crushed inwardly towards a diametrically opposite wall portion of the section. The tube having a section so crushed and bent can be connected to another tube, for example, by disposing the section face-to-face with a complementarily shaped portion of the other tube such that the remainder of the part extends away from the latter portion, and then, for example, welding or bolting the section to the other tube.
