Abstract:
A method and apparatus for maximizing print quality in a thermal printer uses a ribbon condition monitor to detect the condition of a multipass thermal ribbon. Data related to the condition of the thermal ribbon at each individual pixel is used to determine a custom energization signal for each thermal print element. In one embodiment, the system utilizes a history memory to track the prior heating history of each thermal print element and an ink memory to track the prior use of each location on the thermal print ribbon corresponding to the thermal print elements. The data from the history memory and the ink memory are combined to form an index to a table memory containing data corresponding to a plurality of energization signal levels for a particular print medium. The data in the table memory provides the custom energization signal for each of the thermal print elements. In an alternative embodiment, a light source and detector are used to determine the thickness of ink remaining on the thermal ribbon. The energization signal is adjusted to compensate for variations in the thickness of the thermal ribbon. In yet another embodiment, data is encoded at one end of a multipass thermal ribbon. The encoded data provides information related to the amount of usage of the thermal ribbon. The energization signal may be boosted for pixels along the edge of a graphic image so as to maximize the contrast of image edges. The system determines whether a particular pixel is located at the edge of a graphic image area and adjusts the energization signal correspondingly.
Abstract:
A symbology reader uses a linear detector to image a two-dimensional area by scanning the field of view of the linear detector across an image field. In one embodiment, the reader simultaneously decodes data from the linear detector according to two-dimensional techniques and linear and stacked symbology techniques. If the reader identifies a linear or stacked symbology, the two-dimensional processing is interrupted. As the reader scans the field of view of the linear detector across the image field, the scanning mirror simultaneously sweeps a light plane across the image field so that only the imaged region is illuminated, thereby improving the dynamic range of the reader.
Abstract:
A printer for printing on an outer layer of a print medium on a print medium roll. The printer may use thermal or inkjet printing. The printer is used without a mechanical paper drive mechanism. The printer monitors movement of an outer wrap of the print medium as the print medium roll rotates in response to a user pulling print medium from the print medium roll. In one embodiment, the printer detects movement of the print medium with a metering roller and an optical rotation sensor. In another embodiment, the printer monitors movement of the print medium by detecting movement of index marks on the print medium. From the monitored movement of the print medium, the printer identifies a portion of the print medium aligned to the printhead and selects image portions to print in the identified portion. The printer then activates the printhead to print the selected image portions in the corresponding identified portion. A bias spring, together with movable mounting of the printhead, allows the printhead to remain engaged with the print medium as the radius of the print medium roll decreases as the print medium is dispensed.
Abstract:
A system and method for the automatic selection printer operating parameters using a preprinted bar code image on a portion of a selected print medium or a separate sheet of bar code parameters and commands. The bar code image specified characteristics of the selected print medium. A bar code scanner operates in conjunction with a bar code printer and scans the bar code image. The system automatically selects printer operating parameters, such as print speed, print head pressure, and burn duration to configure the printer for optimal operation with the selected print medium. The bar codes can also be used for test and service, label design, data entry, or work in process.
Abstract:
An integrated photonics module may include a selective fold mirror configured to pass at least a portion of emitted light toward the MEMS scanner and reflect scanned light through to a field of view. The selective fold mirror may use beam polarization to select beam passing and reflection. The integrated photonics module may include a beam rotator such as a quarter-wave plate to convert the polarization of the emitted light to a different polarization adapted for passage through the fold mirror. The integrated photonics module may include one or more light detectors.
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for convenient and easy access to product- and shipment-related information and/or transactions is disclosed. A radio frequency tag reader is used to read a radio frequency tag having a structured data format. The end device parses one or more particular data entities from the data read. The radio frequency tag reader accesses a URL having at least a portion in common with one or more of the parsed data entities and displays associated web page content or processes an associated transaction. The radio frequency tag reader may sequentially substitute a series of most probable non-common URL portions to locate associated content if the first tried URL does not result in a valid response. Alternatively, a server may provide such search functionality.

The integrated photonics module may include one or more light detectors.
Abstract:
An endoscope system and method includes an endoscope tip coupled to a endoscope console for providing images of anatomical features imaged using the endoscope system. The system also includes a calibration device having known optical properties. The calibration device is imaged using the endoscope system, and data corresponding to the image is obtained. This data are compared to data corresponding to the known optical properties of the calibration device. Based on this comparison, calibration data corresponding to imaging errors of the endoscope system are obtained. The calibration data are used to calibrate the endoscope system.
Abstract:
Methods and apparatuses for selecting and displaying an image with the best focus are disclosed. In one aspect, a method of displaying a captured image includes capturing a plurality of images of a field of view (FOV) using an image capture device, selecting one of the images having the best focus, and displaying the selected image on the image capture device. In another aspect, a method of displaying a captured image includes capturing a plurality of images of a FOV, dividing each of the images into a plurality of regions, and comparing corresponding regions from each of the images. The regions having the best focus are selected. A composite image is constructed formed from the regions with the best focus and the composite image is displayed. Image capture devices configured to effect the above methods are also disclosed.
