A rear position of rest for the plunger (28) wherein the rear chamber (16) is connected to the front chamber (14) is defined by a front end (32) of a sleeve (34) located in the tubular rear part (22) of the pneumatic piston (20). The plunger (28) has a cylindrical rear part which slides on a front end (32) of the sleeve (34) and the sleeve (34) slides in a leaktight fashion in the bore (26) in response to movement of the operating rod (30). A return spring (38) is located between the pneumatic piston (20) and plunger (28) to permit un-interrupted communication from the high pressure source to the rear chamber (16) on movement of the plunger (28).

In order to continuously change the transmission ratio between power-assisted steering mode and emergency steering mode and to maximize the flow of hydraulic oil in the power-assisted steering mode when the steering wheel is rapidly turned, a steering assembly is proposed which uses a common line which bypasses the metering pump, as a supply line for flow amplification during power-assisted operation and as a return line for changing the transmission ratio during emergency operation. This common line is connected to selected supply lines by way of throttles and with corresponding cylinder lines or with all cylinder lines by way of throttles. Steering devices of this type are employed in mobile equipment, in particular in slowly moving vehicles.

A tandem brake booster having a housing with a first front chamber separated from a first rear chambers by a first wall and a second front chamber separated from a second rear chamber by a second wall. The first and second front chambers are connected to the first and second rear chambers through passages in a hub which retains a control valve. In a first or ready mode of operation, the first and second front and rear chambers have a substantially identical first fluid pressure while in a second or actuation mode of operation, the control valve responds to an input force to allow a second fluid pressure to be communicated to the first and second rear chambers and create a pressure differential with the first fluid in the first and second front chambers. The pressure differential develops an output force which moves the first and second walls as a function of the input force applied to the control valve. The control valve on termination of the input force returns to the first mode of operation as the second fluid pressure is replaced in the first and second rear chambers by the first fluid pressure. The hub member which retains the control valve has an axial bore. A junction is formed within the axial bore with first and second passages which connect the first front chamber with the first rear chamber to define a first flow path and with third and fourth passages which connect the second front chamber with the second rear chamber to define a second flow path. The first and second flow paths independently allow the second fluid pressure to be simultaneously evacuated from the first and second rear chamber as the control valve returns to the first or ready mode of operation.

A brake booster is disclosed which functions as an automatic brake as required. Bellows is disposed within a constant pressure chamber of the brake booster, and has a front end which is connected, by a first support member, to a bulge which is formed in the axial portion of a shell. A seal member is connected to the outer periphery of the first support member, and is held in abutment against the wall surface of the shell at a location radially outward of an inlet for the atmosphere. A communication channel is formed by a space between the first support member and an opposing wall surface of the shell and the bulge and the like. A communication is established between the internal space of the bellows and the inlet through the communication channel. This construction allows the overall length of the brake booster to be reduced as compared with the prior art in which a spacer is provided outside the shell.
