Abstract: Methods, systems, and devices for wireless communication are described. Wireless devices may operate in an extended connected discontinuous reception (eDRX) mode to increase energy efficiency and extend battery life. Control signaling may be used to initiate or support the extended sleep cycles associated with eDRX operation. In some cases, a system frame number (SFN) extension may be implemented to record frame cycles and differentiate SFNs that occur in a first frame cycle from SFNs that occur in a second frame cycle. Control techniques to support eDRX operation and maintain network synchronicity and compatibility may also be employed. In some examples, a wireless system may broadcast extended or dedicated system information updates to an eDRX capable device or devices. In some cases, devices may adjust the rate at which radio link monitoring (RLM) measurements are taken to timely determine radio link failures (RLFs) in conjunction with eDRX operation.

Abstract: Methods, systems, and devices are described for wireless communication at a UE. A user equipment (UE) may receive a control signal from a base station on resources of a first narrowband region. The UE may then identify a second narrowband region based on the control signal. In some cases a broadband carrier may be divided into an indexed set of narrowband regions, and the UE may identify an index using information contained in (implicitly or explicitly) in the control signal. The UE may communicate with the base station on resources of the second narrowband region. For example, a UE may receive a system information block (SIB) or a paging message, and perform a random access procedure using narrowband resources selected based on the SIB or paging message.

The supervision may be based on determination of, and transmissions related to, a list or lists of connected wireless devices. In some cases, the wireless devices may be delay tolerant. The wireless devices may include UEs that may have long sleep cycles and/or machine-type communications (MTC) devices.

An MTC physical broadcast channel may be utilized for the Machine Type Communication. The payload for the MTC physical broadcast channel may be reduced. Some embodiments utilize one or more MTC-specific system information blocks. The MTC-specific system information blocks may combine and/or simplify multiple system information blocks. The location of the MTC system information blocks may be predetermined or information about their location may be transmitted over the MTC physical broadcast channel. A user equipment (UE) may receive control information that identifies criteria to use for determining a delivery status of a protocol data unit (PDU) set that includes multiple PDUs.
