Subchannels are defined for a wireless slotted communication system. A series of radio frames are provided. Each radio frame in the series is associated with a system frame number (SFN). A time slot is assigned in the radio frames for the subchannels. Each subchannel is associated with specified ones of the SFNs.
Abstract:
A wireless digital communication method for a plurality of user equipment mobile terminals (UEs) to communicate with a base station. Adaptive modulation and coding (AM&C) is used to achieve improved radio resource utilization and provide optimum data rates for user services. Blocks of downlink (DL) data are received by the base station which requests downlink DL channel quality measurements only from those mobile terminals (UEs) with pending downlink transmissions. The UEs respond to the request by measuring and reporting DL channel quality to the base station, which then allocates resources such that the UEs will make best use of radio resources. The base station notifies the UEs of the physical channel allocation indicating the modulation/coding rate and allocated slots followed by transmission of blocks of downlink data which are transmitted to the UEs.

The present invention allows for effective sharing of the hardware memory of a wireless transmit receive unit (WTRU). The memory will be shared among various buffers of different entities. More particularly, memory will be shared among the MAC reordering buffers and the RLC reception buffers.
Abstract:
A method for improving the reliability of a channel quality indicator (CQI) message in a wireless communications network begins with receipt of the CQI message. The CQI message is then decoded, and a decision metric value for each symbol in the CQI message is computed. A largest decision metric value and a second largest decision metric value for the CQI message are determined. The reliability of the CQI message can be determined by comparing the two largest decision metric values. This method may be applicable to high-speed downlink packet access in time division duplex, frequency division duplex, or other modes of transmission.

A system, components and methods provide controlled transmitter power in a wireless communication system in which both dedicated and shared channels are utilized. A network unit preferably has a receiver for receiving UL user data from WTRUs on UL DCHs and at least one UL SCH and a processor for computing target metrics for UL DCHs based on the reception of signals transmitted by a WTRU on an UL DCH associated with an UL SCH usable by the WTRU. A shared channel target metric generator is provided that is configured to output a respective UL SCH target metric derived from each computed UL DCH target metric. Each WTRU preferably has a processor which is configured to compute UL DCH power adjustments for an UL DCH associated with an UL SCH as a function of UL DCH target metrics computed by the network unit based on the reception of signals transmitted by the WTRU on the UL DCH and UL SCH power adjustments for the associated UL SCH as a function of the respective UL SCH target metrics output from the shared channel target metric generator. Preferably, the target metrics are target signal to interference ratios (SIRs).

Method and apparatus for synchronizing base stations employing an independent synchronizing source or identifying a base station as a master source. An RNC (C-RNC) or a base station may designate one base station or a UE to acquire measurements derived from base stations to achieve synchronization. Synchronization activities may be regularly scheduled or may be undertaken when periodic measurements indicate that a drift value exceeds a given threshold.

In a wireless digital communication system employing code-division multiple access (CDMA) technology, a method in which adaptive modulation and coding (AM&C) is utilized in order to achieve improved radio resource utilization and provide increased data rates for user services in which the base station measures up link interference on all time slots received from mobile terminals (UEs) and determines the need for uplink control channel; the base station transmitting to the UE the allocation of specific uplink control channels indicating uplink interference in the time slot and potentially the quality margin; the UE determining appropriate uplink power level based on a path loss determination made by the UE, uplink interference and the quality margin; the UE initiating an uplink common control transmission responsive to these determinations.

A user equipment transmits a signature in a selected one of a plurality of time slots of a common packet channel. The common packet channel is defined by a predetermined set of codes and has a plurality of access opportunities. Each access opportunity is defined by a time slot of the plurality of time slots and a signature. An identifier of a selected code of the predetermined set of codes is identified. The selected code is selected from a currently unused code, if available, based on a code association with the access opportunity defined by the selected signature and selected one time slot. The user equipment communicates using the one selected code.
