Disclosed are bio-active coating compositions for polymeric substrates. In particular, a bio-active coating is described which is the reaction product formed by providing a polymer backbone with at least one free isocyanate group, wherein the isocyanate group is pendant from the polymer backbone. There is further provided a hydrophilic, amine-terminated spacer which has at least one amine group at its first and second ends. One of the amine groups of the spacer is reacted with one or more of the isocyanate groups on the polymer backbone in the presence of an optional catalyst agent. A bio-active agent is then covalently bonded onto an unreacted end of the spacer in the presence of a catalyst. Also disclosed are coating compositions for a substrate and methods of preparing same.

A method for preparing stable even coatings of a silicone lubricant on a low surface energy polymeric surface of an article includes plasma treatment of the surface in an atmosphere of a siloxane monomer. A layer of polysiloxane is deposited on the low energy surface to give a polysiloxane surface. A film of a polysiloxane lubricant having a surface tension substantially the same as or less than the surface energy of the polysiloxane surface is applied to the polysiloxane layer.

Non-blocking, hemocompatible, thermoplastic, fluorinated polyetherurethanes and a method for their preparation from fluorinated polyether glycols, isocyanates, chain extenders and a non-fluorinated polyol. The method includes two steps in which the fluorinated glycol is reacted initially with the diisocyanate to give a prepolymer having terminal isocyanate groups, and the prepolymer is then reacted with the extender and non-fluorinated polyol. Medical devices are fabricated from the fluorinated polyetherurethane.

Partition membranes which are permeable to blood electrolytes fabricated from crosslinked polyetherurethane compositions having from 20 to 50% hard segments. The membranes absorb from 50 to 120% of their dry weight of water and have electrolyte diffusion constants of up to 1.times.10.sup.-6 cm.sup.2 /sec. The membranes are included in electrochemical, fiber optic and solid state blood electrolyte sensors to provide blood compatible surfaces and to ensure that blood components deleterious to analysis of electrolyte in the blood remain separated from the sensing elements.
