The present invention relates to a method of preparing a vinyl chloride polymer having good thermal stability due to the restraint of dehydrochlorination by heat or ultraviolet rays, and a vinyl chloride polymer prepared thereby. In the preparation method through bulk polymerization, a modifier is introduced to a polymerization process to impart the vinyl chloride polymer with high thermal stability without inducing modification. Therefore, the preparation method via the bulk polymerization of the vinyl chloride polymer and the vinyl chloride polymer prepared thereby according to the present invention may be readily applied to industries requiring thereof such as industries concerning a vinyl chloride resin and the molded article thereof.

Disclosed is a process for preparing copolymers which comprises, in the order stated: (1) adding monomers containing unsaturated carbon-to-carbon bonds, a first polymerization initiator, a second polymerization initiator, and a solvent to a reaction vessel; (2) purging the resulting solution with an inert gas; (3) sealing the reaction vessel and pressurizing it by addition of an inert gas to a pressure of from about 20 to about 600 kilopascals over ambient atmospheric pressure; (4) maintaining the temperature within the pressurized reaction vessel at a temperature of from about 50 to about 100.degree. C. for a period of from about 60 to about 300 minutes; (5) thereafter maintaining the temperature within the pressurized reaction vessel at a temperature of from about 80 to about 115.degree. C. for a period of from about 30 to about 300 minutes, wherein the temperature in step (5) is higher than the temperature in step (4); and (6) subsequently maintaining the temperature within the pressurized reaction vessel at a temperature of from about 115 to about 160.degree. C. for a period of from about 30 to about 180 minutes, wherein the temperature in step (6) is higher than the temperature in step (5). Polymers prepared according to the process of the present invention can be particularly useful in migration imaging members.

The invention relates to a process for (co)polymerizing vinyl monomers in the presence of a radical polymerization initiator, characterized in that said radical polymerization initiator is a 3-methylpentyl-3-peroxy alkanoate of formula (I) wherein R.sub.1, R.sub.2 and R.sub.3 represent alkyl groups each having at most 9 carbon atoms with the proviso that the total number of carbon atoms of R.sub.1, R.sub.2 and R.sub.3 is at most 11, said 3-methylpentyl-3-peroxy alkanoate being employed in an amount of 0.002 to 2.0 parts by weight, based on 100 parts by weight of monomers present, said process being carried out at a temperature above 20.degree. C. The use of 3-methylpentyl-3-peroxy alkanoates in the present invention surprisingly and unexpectedly results in a higher polymerization velocity, a shortened polymerization time, and an increase in conversion as compared with the results obtained by using other radical polymerization initiators. It has also been found that the obtained polymer has excellent thermal stability and is not affected by odour or coloration. Thus the industrial value of the radical polymerization initiator peroxide of the present invention is remarkably high.

A process for producing a vinyl chloride-based polymer, which comprises suspension polymerizing vinyl chloride monomer or a vinyl chloride-containing monomeric mixture in an aqueous medium in the presence of an oil-soluble polymerization initiator, wherein the initiator comprises (A) at least one compound having a 10-hour half-life temperature, at a concentration of 0.1 mol/l in benzene, of not lower than 35.degree. C., and (B) at least one compound having a 10-hour half-life temperature, at a concentration of 0.1 mol/l in benzene, of lower than 35.degree. C., with the amount of the initiator (B) being from 0.01 to 0.07% by weight based on the monomer or monomeric mixture and being from 10 to 30% by weight based on the total amount of the initiators (A) and (B). The process makes it possible to shorten easily the time required for raising temperature, and to produce vinyl chloride-based polymers which have a good particle size distribution and which have few fish eyes when formed into sheets or the like.
