Abstract: A catalyst composition, suitable for producing ethylene and other C2+ hydrocarbons from methane. The composition includes a blended product of two distinct catalyst components, blended at such synergistic proportions, that results in a catalyst having high C2+ hydrocarbon selectivity while maintaining an overall sufficient catalyst activity and low ethyne selectivity. Methods for preparing such a catalyst composition and a process for producing C2+ hydrocarbons using such a catalyst composition are provided.

Abstract: A method of autothermal oxidative coupling of methane (OCM) utilizes introducing a methane-containing feedstock and an oxygen-gas-containing feedstock into a reactor (10) as a flowing mixture (18) with a space time of 500 ms or less. The reactor (10) contains a catalyst bed (20) of an OCM catalyst that contacts the flowing mixture and wherein the catalyst bed (20) has a heat Peclet number (Peh) of from 5 or less, a mass Peclet number (Pem) of from 5 or more, and a transverse Peclet number (P) of from 1 or less while contacting the flowing mixture. The methane and oxygen of the feedstocks are allowed to react within the reactor (10) to form methane oxidative coupling reaction products. A reactor (10) for carrying out the OCM reaction is also disclosed.

Abstract: An oxidative methane coupling (OCM) reactor has a reactor vessel that defines a reactor vessel interior. The reactor vessel having opposite ends and a central longitudinal axis that extends between the opposite ends. A catalyst bed assembly is positioned within the reactor vessel interior having a catalyst bed containing a layer of OCM catalyst of a uniform thickness. The catalyst bed assembly divides the reactor vessel interior into an upstream zone and a downstream zone. The catalyst bed has an upstream face for receiving the one or more flowing feed gases of methane and oxygen gas as a flowing mixture from the upstream zone. The upstream face of the catalyst bed is configured to have a total area that exceeds the largest transverse cross-sectional area of the interior of the reactor vessel that is perpendicular to the central longitudinal axis of the reactor vessel. The catalyst bed assembly is configured so that any portion of the flowing mixture passes from the upstream zone to the downstream zone through a single catalyst bed of the catalyst bed assembly.

A portion of the swirling gas mixture is combusted as the swirling gas mixture passes through the conduit (46) for conversion of hydrocarbons.

Abstract: A pyrolysis reactor (12) and method for the pyrolysis of hydrocarbon gases (e.g., methane) utilizes a pyrolysis reactor (12) having a unique burner assembly (44) and pyrolysis feed assembly (56) that creates an inwardly spiraling fluid flow pattern of the feed gases to form a swirling gas mixture that passes through a burner conduit (46) with a constricted neck portion or nozzle (52). At least a portion of the swirling gas mixture forms a thin, annular mixed gas flow layer immediately adjacent to the burner conduit (46). A portion of the swirling gas mixture is combusted as the swirling gas mixture passes through the burner conduit (46) and a portion of combustion products circulates in the burner assembly (44). This provides conditions suitable for pyrolysis of hydrocarbons or light alkane gas, such as methane or natural gas.
