Abstract: A memory device comprises a substrate, an antenna on a first surface of the substrate, a microelectronic structure coupled to the antenna, a selectively deformable intermediate layer covering the first surface, the antenna and the microelectronic structure and conforming thereto, and an adhesive layer covering the intermediate layer. The intermediate layer may be deformable for selectively positioning the antenna with respect to the adhesive, and positioning the antenna with respect to an item to which the memory device is secured. The intermediate layer may be compressed, creating a relatively low profile for printing on the memory device. The intermediate layer may be an elastomerically compressible material, such as foam, or may be a selectively pressurizable and deformable envelope. A substantially planar surface of the intermediate layer provides a smooth surface for further manufacturing steps such as forming a protective film layer, a conductive ground layer, or for depositing adhesive and die cutting the RF tag onto a release liner. A face sheet may be positioned on the second surface of the substrate to provide a smooth surface for printing. Alternatively, the intermediate layer may provide a substantially planar surface for the face sheet. The ground layer may be formed from a spent transfer ribbon. A second ground layer and a dielectric layer may form a capacitor.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for storing, reading, and updating information abode a plurality of target objects. The apparatus includes a data reader and a plurality of readable and writable tags, each tag including a memory. The reader produces a modulated interrogation signal or beam for activating and writing to the tag. The detector within the tag detects the modulated interrogation signal and, in response thereto, accesses the memory for reading or writing. The tag also includes an emitter so that the tag may be read by the reader. During reading, data is retrieved from the memory and the emitter within the tag is modulated to produce a data signal representing the retrieved data. The tags also include optically readable symbols that supply control information for use by the reader in reading from and writing to the memories of the tags. In one embodiment, the tag takes the form of a photonic tag, the interrogation signal being formed as a modulated optical beam. In another embodiment, the tag is provided in the form of an RF tag, the interrogation signal comprising a modulated RF transmission.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for controlling a thermal printhead. In response to a sequence of print commands, the method and apparatus generate an energization signal for each thermal print element in the printhead. In one embodiment, the energization is a function of at least the present print command and a future print command. In certain embodiments, the energization signal may also be a function of a past print command, print commands for at least one adjoining print element, and other parameters. Each print element in the printhead can, accordingly, be maintained at a proper temperature to ensure long printhead life and cause the printhead to generate sharp images.

Abstract: A thermal printhead incorporating an elongated heat conduction chamber which is oriented in alignment with an array of printhead heating elements and used to transfer heat along the array to equalize heat distribution. The chamber contains a heat transfer fluid and wicks. The fluid when in a liquid state absorbs heat at a hot spot along the array through evaporation, transports the heat along the array to cooler portions of the chamber as a gas through gas dynamics and localized pressure, condenses to the liquid form, and returns to the hot spot through the capillary action of the wicks. In another embodiment, a metal strip is used to distribute the heat along the heating element array between hot and cool portions of the array.
