Abstract:
A foldable cardboard backing is secured to one surface of a flexible mass transfer membrane to enable rapid formation of a folded multi-layered device by compressing the backing and membrane connected thereto into folds and then fixing the folds by sealing their ends.
Abstract:
A rotor assembly for an apparatus adapted for monitoring a chemical reaction and identifying the presence of certain substances in each of a multiplicity of discreet samples. The assembly includes a transfer disc for storing individually the various constituents of one or more independent reactions and a cuvette rotor disposed concentrically thereto. The cuvette rotor provides in the path of light to a photoresponsive device a multiplicity of chambers for receipt of the constituents of each reaction. Means are provided in the cuvette rotor to heat the constituents to optimum temperature and to maintain the constituents at that temperature during the reaction time.
Abstract:
An improved method for the fermentative production of streptokinase by the growth of hemolytic streptococci which consists of growing the bacteria in a fermentation medium containing corn steep liquor.
Abstract:
A rapid and convenient method for the detection and quantitation of complement fixing antibodies in blood serum consisting of admixing predetermined amounts of complement and complement fixing antigen with said serum and then reacting the mixture with a known amount of hemolysin-sensitized erythrocytes in a semisolid gel medium for a predetermined period of time.
Abstract:
Oxygen to be administered to a patient is humidified by passing the oxygen through a standard water-containing solution bottle. A coupling assembly having an inlet tube and an outlet tube is inserted into the two openings defined by the stopper of the intravenous solution bottle, and is coupled to an oxygen supply. The connector assembly is capable of supporting the bottle, and carries a humidified oxygen outlet to which a nasal cannula is coupled.
Abstract:
A fitting assembly for joining small-diameter tubing to other tubing or to various other fittings or fixtures. The assembly consists of a threaded bushing of metal or plastic, a stainless steel washer, an elastomeric O-ring, and a deformable flared ferrule. The unaltered tubing extends through the bushing, washer, O-ring and ferrule. The assembly is screwed into a threaded port coupling or fitting with a flat bottom. Sealing is accomplished by the pressure of the constrained O-ring, forcing the flared ferrule against the bottom of the port, and similarly, the radial pressure of the O-ring seals the ferrule to the tubing wall, deforming the tube slightly. The stainless steel washer serves to constrain the O-ring and to decouple the torque exerted by the bushing.
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for testing transport membranes provides for advancing a membrane and an indicator medium in unison along a test path while applying a detector fluid to the membrane to produce marks on the indicator medium representative of leaks in the membrane.
Abstract:
A METHOD OF IMPROVING THE YIELD OF ANTIHEMOPHILIC FACTOR A OBTAINED FROM BLOOD PLASMA AND PLASMA FRACTIONS COMPOSITION THE ADDITION OF FROM 0.01 TO 10 UNITS OF HEPARIN TO SAID PLASMA OR PLASMA FRACTION PER ML. OF SOLUTION THEREOF.
Abstract:
A MASS TRANSFER DEVICE IS MADE BY WINDING A HOLLOW TUBULAR CONDUIT OF SEMI-PERMEABLE MEMBRANE ABOUT A CORE TO FORM A MULTILAYER WINDING OF THE CONDUIT IN WHICH INDIVIDUAL ADJACENT WINDINGS IN THE SAME LAYER ARE GENERALLY PARALLEL TO EACH OTHER, BUT INDIVIDUAL ADJACENT WNDINGS OF THE CONDUIT IN ADJACENTS LAYERS DEFINE AN ANGLE TO EACH OTHER. THE ENDS OF THE CORE TRANSVERSE TO THE TUBULAR CONDUIT WINDINGS ARE THEN POTTED WITH A CURABLE SEALANT. AFTER CURE OF THE SEALANT, THE ENDS OF THE WOUND CORE ARE CUT TRANSVERSELY THROUGH MEDIAL PORTIONS OF THE CURED SEALANT TO SEVVER THE CONDUIT INTO A PLURALITY OF INDIVIDUAL CONDUIT SECTIOBS, THE RESULTING SECTIONS BEING SECURED TOGETHER AT THEIR ENDS BY PORTIONS OF THE CURED SEALANT, AND HAVING THEIR HOLLOW BORES OPEN TO THE EXTERIOR. MANIFOLDS ARE THEN APPLIED TO PROVIDE ONE FLUID FLOW PATH PASSING THROUGH THE HOLLOW BORES OF THE CONDUIT PORTIONS AND ANOTHER FLUID
FLOW PATH PERCOLATING BETWEEN THE EXTERIORS OF THE CONDUIT PORTIONS.
Abstract:
The present application discloses a procedure for forming a beveled tip on a needle assembly including a cannula and an obturator. The assembly is subjected to a swaging or drawing operation for drawing the cannula inner wall into substantial contact with the obturator thereby to frictionally immobilize the latter. In this condition the assembly is provided with a tip. Tipping results in the reduction of gripping friction so that the obturator may be released. The procedure provides an assembly having no appreciable clearance or mismatch between cannula and obturator thereby to substantially reduce incidence of coring of tissue being punctured.
