A substrate of either metal or plastic which is coated with a crater resistant enamel coating composition is used for the exterior of trucks and automobiles; the binder of the coating composition is a blend of(A) an acrylic polymer having hydroxy groups and contains about 0.1-10% by weight of a polymerized perfluoro carbon constituent of the formula ##STR1## where R is H or CH.sub.3, R.sup.1 is alkyl, R.sup.2 is perfluoro alkyl and n is 0 or 1 and(B) an aminoplast crosslinking agent such as an alkylated melamine formaldehyde resin;The composition is applied and baked by conventional techniques, to form a finish on the substrate that has an excellent appearance.

Alkoxyalkylaminotriazine trans-etherification products are obtained by reacting an alkoxyalkylaminotriazine of the general formula ##STR1## where X is hydrogen, alkyl, phenyl, alkylphenyl or ##STR2## A and B are hydrogen, alkyl, alkenyl or ##STR3## and R and R' are hydrogen or alkyl, with from 0.1 to 6 moles, per mole of alkoxyalkylaminotriazine, of a .beta.-hydroxyaldehyde of the general formula ##STR4## where R", R"' and R"" are identical or different and each is hydrogen or alkyl or R"' and R"" together with the .alpha.-carbon atom form a cyclopentane or cyclohexane ring, and R"' and/or R"" can also be hydroxyalkyl and R"" can also be phenyl, in the presence of an acidic catalyst, and removing the alcohol resulting from the trans-etherification. The alkoxyalkylaminotriazine trans-etherification products may be used in baking finishes and acid-hardening surface coatings.

A high solids polymer resin coating composition cross-linked with alkylated melamine resins possessing improved intercoat adhesion in multiple coating applications. A mixed methylated isobutylated melamine resin as a cross-linking agent for the high solids polymer resin coating composition surprisingly substantially eliminates intercoat adhesion failure without any negative effects on overall coating properties and performance. The backbone polymer of the composition may advantageously be acrylic resin, a polyester resin or mixtures thereof while the mixed methylated isobutylated melamine resin cross-linking agent is advantageously predominantly monomeric poly(methoxy isobutoxymethyl) melamine resin with an average methoxy content of 1-5 and an average isobutoxy content of 5-1, per triazine.

The powder paint is based upon a one-component, self-curing polymeric binder comprising a thermosetting glycoluril copolymer containing methylol or alkoxy methyl glycoluril groups adapted to cross-link with reactive hydroxyl, carboxyl, or amide groups on the copolymer. Coated formed materials of plastics or glass having improved anti-scratching and anti-fogging properties, are produced by applying to the surface of the formed material an undercoating material comprising (a) a mixture of methylolmelamine in which all or a part of the methylol groups are alkyletherified, and a polyhydric alcohol having a molecular weight of 1,500 or less which may contain an ethylene oxide or propylene oxide chain, or a pre-condensate thereof, (b) a mixture of a monomer having a unit of the formula (I), ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are independently a hydrogen atom or a lower alkyl, carboxyl or amino group and X is a hydroxyl group-containing side chain, or a homopolymer or copolymer thereof, and a crosslinking agent, or (c) a mixture of (a) and (b), followed by curing it so that the percentage of residual hydroxyl groups therein is from 60 to 90%, thereby forming a resin film (1), and then topcoating the resin film (1) with a topcoating material comprising a mixture of (d) a mixture of methylolmelamine in which all or a part of the methylol groups are alkyletherified, and a polyhydric alcohol having a molecular weight of 100 to 2,000 and an ethylene oxide chain, or a pre-condensate thereof and (e) a surface active agent, followed by curing it so that the percentage of residual hydroxyl groups therein is from 35 to 70%, thereby forming a melamine resin film (2).
