The invention further provides foods, beverages, including clear ones, or pharmaceutical preparations, which are supplemented with the nanoparticles made of: sugar-beet pectin; and a hydrophobic bioactive compound bound to sugar-beet pectin. The process of making the nanoparticles of the invention, and methods for supplementing foods or beverages or pharmaceutical preparations with bioactive compounds via the nanoparticles of the invention are also provided.

The present invention relates to a protective agent suitable to protect the human skin against toxic materials, particularly against chemicals with nucleophilic sites. The active moiety is a polyanhydride derivative. The active transdermal retardant offers a barrier property and chemically and/or physically reacts with harmful chemicals to decrease percutaneous absorption. In the preferred embodiments, polyanhydride in its low molecular weight form reduced flux of nicotine and nitrofurazone significantly. Additionally, polyanhydride in its high molecular weight form prevented nicotine absorption and decreased nitrofurazone permeation dramatically. Moreover, the polyanhydride in its high molecular weight form reduced nitroglycerin flux to a lesser extent.

An object of the invention is to provide an adsorbent having high adsorbability per unit volume and a high adsorption rate as an adsorbent for water treatment or medical care and to provide an adsorbent capable of completely adsorbing an aimed substance within a short time as an adsorbent for medical care. The desired adsorbent is an adsorbent produced from a phenol resin as a starting material and having 0.10 to 0.60 ml/g of volume of fine pores with diameters in a range from 0.02 to 10 μm, a specific surface area in a range from 800 to 3000 m2/g, and an average particle diameter in a range from 0.1 to 0.8 mm. The adsorbent is produced by conducting carbonization of the phenol resin as a starting material at 350 to 550° C., then heating up to 700 to 950° C. at a rate of 5 to 20° C./min, and successively carrying out activation of the obtained carbonized product.

A method for the reduction in the risk of transmitting a sexually transmitted disease--especially HIV and/or HSV--during sexual activity is provided. This method generally comprises the application of an effective amount of an inhibitory agent, preferably as a topical formulation, to the area or areas of sexual contact prior to engaging in sexual activity. Inhibitory agents which are useful in the present invention include, for example, phosphorylated hesperidins, sulfonated hesperidins, polystyrene sulfonates, substituted benzenesulfonic acid formaldehyde co-polymers, H.sub.2 SO.sub.4 -modified mandelic acids, and the like. This method can be used by heterosexuals, homosexuals, and/or bisexuals engaged in a wide variety of sexual activities. In addition to anti-STD activity, these agents may also act as vaginal contraceptives; moreover, they generally have fewer side effects than conventional vaginal contraceptives (e.g., nonoxynol-9). For example, the compounds useful in this invention are generally not toxic to natural and beneficial vaginal flora and, thus, do not upset the local microbiological balance. The anti-STD method of the present invention has the added advantage that it can be implemented and controlled by either sexual party. Methods are also provided for reducing the risk of transmission of STD-causing organisms to health care providers and laboratory personnel (or other persons) who may come into contact with biological samples and specimens.
