A method for delivering a geometric type stress relief element to a terminated electrical cable is provided. The cable contains a conductor surrounded by at least one coaxial layer of insulator, semiconductor, grounded wires and cable jacket. First, the terminated cable is tapered to expose a portion of the conductor so as to protrude beyond the insulation, which protrudes beyond semiconductor, which protrudes beyond the conductive wires. A geometric stress cone is preloaded onto a cold shrink tube. The terminated, tapered cable is inserted into the cold shrink tube. The cold shrink tube is removed and the geometric stress cone collapses onto the tapered cable. The cable is rated for supplying high voltage.

A termination anchor having a neck region, a mid region, and a distal region. An expanding passage through the anchor from the neck region to the distal region is bounded by an internal surface. Exposed strands on a cable are trapped within this expanding passage by infusing them with liquid potting compound (either before or after the strands are placed within the passage). This liquid potting compound solidifies while the strands are within the anchor to form a solidified potted region. The present invention optimizes the profile of the internal surface in order to transfer stress occurring in the neck region to the mid region and the distal region. By transferring some of this stress, a more uniform stress distribution and a lower peak stress are achieved.

A method of building a cable termination is provided. The termination has an outer insulator body, a substantially longitudinally extended interior member having the electrical cable to be terminated, having a conductor for carrying load, an insulating material filled in a cavity between the outer insulator body and the interior member and means for accommodating volume expansions of the insulating material filled within the cavity. The cavity is created by introducing the interior member into the insulator body, filling the insulating material into the cavity and sealing the termination. A volume change compensation member having a predetermined volume to accommodate volume expansions of the insulating material within the cavity is placed into the cavity. Respective terminations are also provided.

An outer sheath of a shield wire is stripped by a predetermined length from an end of the shield wire to expose a knitted layer of the shield wire. A shield stopper is mated over the exposed knitted layer until the shield stopper abuts against a stripped end of the outer sheath. A metal shell piece is preparatorily mated over an inner sheath of the shield wire while the metal shell piece expands the knitted layer. The shield stopper is clamped by a clamp means, and the mated metal shell piece is pushed to engage with the shield stopper. In the engagement state, the shield stopper overlaps a forward end portion of the metal shell with the knitted layer therebetween. A first cutter is guided by a pipe member so that the first cutter engages with an outer peripheral surface of the second cutter. Thereby, the shearing movement of the cutters cuts the exposed knitted layer near a rear end of the shield stopper.

A novel high voltage power cable terminator of the type having a rigid insulating housing made of an inorganic material is provided which employs a pre-stretched elastomeric stress relief tube mounted on a removable core prior to installation to facilitate installation of the terminator upon a prepared end of a high voltage cable. The removable core is a generally cylindrical, helically grooved tubular structure. The stress relief tube is supported coaxially in a stretched condition upon the exterior of the core prior to installation. To install the stress relief tube on the cable, the prepared end portion of the cable is positioned within the hollow interior of the core, and the core is then removed to allow the elastomeric stress relief tube to contract and grip the peripheral surface of the portion of the cable where stress relief is desired.
