A hub member, having a hub spline and an inclined portion is disposed adjacent to the actuator. A cam member, having a cam spline and cam lobes is rotatably disposed on the input member. A shaft member, having a shaft spline and plurality of slots is rotatably disposed on the input member. The hub spline is engaged with the cam spline in a disengaged position of the actuator. The clutch assembly further includes a plurality of balls received within the corresponding slots of the shaft member. While moving towards an engaged position of the actuator, the cam spline aligns with the shaft spline thereby the hub spline engages with the shaft spline in the engaged position of the actuator.

A rolling bearing clutch including an inner ring, an outer ring and a plurality of rollers interposed between the track surfaces formed on the inner and outer rings, said rollers are inclined with a predetermined twist angle (.beta.) relative to the center axis of the rings, each of the track surfaces of the inner and outer rings exhibits a hyperboloid contour, and when rings are relatively rotated in one direction, the rolling bearing clutch is brought into the locked condition and the clutch is freely rotatable in a reverse direction, wherein the rolling contact angle of at least one of contact portions of each of the rollers with the track surfaces as seen in the axial direction of the rollers is set to be larger than the frictional angle corresponding to the static frictional coefficient at the contact portion, whereby when the rings are rotated in the locking direction, the rollers can slide at the contact portions with the track surfaces, thrusting means is provided for allowing the track surfaces of the inner ring and the outer ring to come near each other, the inner and outer rings are locked by thrusting outer ring by the thrusting means while the inner and outer rings are rotated in locking direction, whereby the clutch is brought in the ON condition and the clutch is brought in the OFF condition by allowing the rollers to slide at the contact portions with the track surfaces by releasing the thrusting means from the thrust condition, whereby the rolling bearing clutch is not necessary to perform screw-back operation when the clutch is shifted to OFF condition.

A pneumatically engageable clutch for coupling a rotating shaft with a rotatable member comprises a compressed air passage in the rotating shaft. The compressed air passage opens in a port in the peripheral surface of the shaft. A stationary casing surrounds the shaft and has an annular chamber adjacent the port, compressed air being supplied to the annular chamber. The annular chamber is sealed by packing rings, such as Simmer rings, made of elastomeric material an engaging the shaft. To reduce the pressure difference across the packing rings, hydraulic pressure is applied to the outsides of the packing rings. Control means keep the hydraulic pressure substantially equal to the compressed air pressure. In one embodiment, the control means comprise a slide valve. In another embodiment, the control means comprise a partially oil-filled closed system which includes chambers axially outside of the packing rings, the compressed air pressure acting statically on the oil level.
