A novel method of blackening surgical needles is disclosed. Surgical needles having outer surfaces are first placed into a first pretreatment bath having a novel composition. The needles are then placed into a second blackening bath having a novel composition for a sufficient period of time to effectively blacken the surfaces of the needles. The novel methods for blackening the surfaces of a stainless steel alloy surgical needle provide a chromium (VI)-free alternative to current needle manufacturing processes. Another unique feature of this novel method is its short processing time. The blackening processes of the present invention can be utilized for in-line treatment processes which can be easily incorporated into high speed needle manufacturing processes, such as strip mounted processes. In addition, the processes of the present invention are readily adaptable to batch processes. Also disclosed are novel systems for blackening surgical needles and novel blackening baths for surgical needles.

These effects are obtained as a result of the steel having a chemical composition containing, in mass %: 0.003% to 0.020% of C; 0.05% to 1.00% of Si; 0.10% to 0.50% of Mn, 0.05% or less of P; 0.01% or less of S; 16.0% to 25.0% of Cr; 0.05% to 0.35% of Ti; 0.005% to 0.05% of Al; and 0.005% to 0.025% of N, the balance being Fe and incidental impurities, and as a result of a nitrogen-enriched layer being created that has a nitrogen concentration peak value of 0.05 mass % to 0.30 mass % at a depth of within 0.05 μm of a surface of the steel.

This invention provides methods and apparatuses which can manufacture Si-containing cold rolled steel sheets exhibiting excellent chemical conversion properties even if a chemical conversion treatment solution is used at a lower temperature while minimally suppressing the generation of sludge as well as reducing running costs. The method includes steps of cold rolling a steel containing 0.5 to 3.0 mass % Si, continuously annealing the cold rolled steel sheet, pickling the surface of the continuously annealed cold rolled steel sheet, and repickling the surface of the pickled steel sheet with a non-oxidative acid. The repickling is performed such that a repickling solution is sampled continuously or periodically, an acid concentration in the sampled solution is measured, and the acid concentration in the repickling solution is regularly controlled within a prescribed concentration range.
