A water-based coating composition that does not use an organic solvent is formed by dispersing a resin composition into an aqueous medium. The water-based coating composition has excellent stability over time. The coating film obtained from the composition has excellent retort resistance, adhesion to metals, processability and chemical resistance; and it can be cured at relatively low temperatures. A process is disclosed for preparing a composition comprising a polybutyl ketone and a hydroxyester of an epoxidized polybutene wherein the epoxide groups of said epoxidized polybutene are at least 70% trisubstituted. Acid compounds are reacted with epoxidized polybutenes to obtain compositions of increased reactivity as compared with polybutyl ketone compounds. These compositions are useful as chemical intermediates to modify such materials as polyesters and polyurethenes, for applications such as coatings, foams, and sealants.

Flexible thermoplastic epoxy resins are prepared by reacting (1) an advanced epoxy resin prepared by reacting a mixture of an aromatic based epoxy resin and an aliphatic based epoxy resin with a polyhydric phenol in the presence of an advancement catalyst with (2) a monocarboxylic acid or anhydride thereof; reacting the resultant product with a mixture of an aromatic based epoxy resin and a monofunctional material reactive with vicinal epoxy groups; and reacting the resultant product with a carboxyl terminated elastomer. These resins are particularly useful in formulating pavement marking paints.

A resin is provided which is the adduct of a monocarboxylic acid and a diglycidyl ether of a bisphenol, or of a monocarboxylic acid, a bisphenol, and a diglycidyl ether of a bisphenol, reacted with an anhydride to an Acid No. of 35 to 150. This resin is solubilized with a volatile amine, ammonia, or NH.sub.4 OH in a solvent mixture of water, alkoxyethanols, alcohols, and alkyl ethers of diethylene glycol and combined with an aminoplast to produce a coating composition utilizable to coat surfaces that will contact a food or beverage, such as in metal packaging containers.
