The lower portion of the side sheets lies laterally inboard of the stiffener web, while the upper portion lies laterally outboard of the stiffener web. The side slope sheet of the hopper meets the sidewall at the transition of the sidewall sheet from the inside-the-post to the outside-the-post condition.

The closure members come together to a closed condition or position for retaining lading. When apart, in an open position or condition, lading may be discharged. A seal member or seal member assembly is mounted to one or both of the closure members. When open, the seal member or seal member assembly lies substantially flush with, or shy of, the slope of the surface of the closure member. When closed, the seal member may be self-energizing, in the sense that as lading is added the seal may tend to seal more tightly. The seal assembly may include a cantilevered spring that presents a land to the opposed closure member, and a fulcrum, over, or across, which the spring is cantilevered, such that pushing down on one end of the spring may tend to cause the other end to flex upward. The fulcrum may also be cantilevered outward from the slope sheet of the closure member to which the seal assembly is attached. The discharge section may be robustly reinforced to discourage deformation.

A railcar door operating mechanism with piston lock used for opening, closing and locking a railcar door. The railcar door operating mechanism may include a hydraulic piston, a piston lock, a lock drive, and a lock drive piston. To open a railcar door the lock drive piston extends and causes movement of the lock drive. The lock drive then engages the piston lock and moves the piston lock from a locked position to an unlocked position. Once the piston lock is in an unlocked position, the hydraulic piston is then retracted to open the railcar door. To close the railcar door, the hydraulic piston is again activated extending the hydraulic piston to close the railcar door. The lock drive piston may then retract and cause movement of the lock drive. The lock drive may again engage the piston lock and move the piston lock into a locked position.

The accumulator cylinder has a tappet which can be axially displaced within the cylinder. When a defined load pressure is reached in the oil chamber of the cylinder, the tappet can be displaced by a piston to actuate a control valve. The valve serves as shut-off device for the loading fluid stream flowing to the oil chamber and is positioned as a detachable module on the exterior face of cylinder cover in such a way that it can be actuated by the outer end of the tappet.
