The hydrogenated vinyl-polybutadienes according to the present invention have degrees of hydrogenation of from 20 to 100%, Mooney viscosities in the range of from 10 to 150 Mooney units (ML 1+4/100° C.), glass transition temperatures (Tg) of ≦−57° C. and enthalpies of fusion (ΔH) of ≦30 J/g and having a microstructure with a) from 0 to 44 wt. % 1,2-vinyl-butadiene units of the formula b) from 20 to 64 wt. % 1,2-butylene units of the formula c) from 0 to 60 wt. % 1,4-butenylene units of the formula CH2—CH═CH—CH2 and d) from 0 to 60 wt. % 1,4-butylene units of the formula CH2—CH2—CH2—CH2 are outstandingly suitable for the production of rubber molded bodies of any kind, especially for the production of industrial rubber articles and of tires and tire components. The rubber molded bodies produced from the hydrogenated vinyl-polybutadienes according to the present invention have good resistance to ageing and good elasticity at low temperatures.

The present invention relates to rubber mixtures based on silica and carbon black-filled solution styrene/butadiene rubbers in which the silica has been partially replaced by rubber gels. The vulcanizates produced from the rubber mixtures of the present invention are distinguished by improved cushioning behavior at 0° C. and 60° C., and this is accompanied by better resistance to slipping when wet and improved rolling resistance. In addition, the vulcanizates have good resistance to wear. The processing behavior of the unvulcanized rubber mixtures (compound viscosity and Mooney relaxation) is not impaired by the partial substitution of silica.

A rubber composition which contains a rubber mixture that can be vulcanized with a vulcanizing agent, which includes at least one rubber component, at least one filler having nucleophilic groups, gel particles comprising a rubber, having a particle size between about 3×10−9 and about 1×10−6 m and a swelling index in toluene of about 1 to about 15 and whose surface has electrophilic centers, and a substance acting as a coupling agent between the filler having nucleophilic groups and the additional filler, the substance acting as a coupling agent having the following structure: X—R1—Si—(R2)3, wherein X is a nucleophilic group, R1 is an alkyl group having up to about 6 carbon atoms or a phenyl group, and R2 may be the same as or different from each other and from R1 and is an alkyl or alkoxy group having up to 6 carbon atoms and at least one of R2 is an alkoxy group. The rubber composition has improved hysteresis behavior in the vulcanized state so that with the use of this rubber composition in tires, the rolling resistance is reduced and the wet slippage behavior is improved in relation to conventional rubber compositions. A method of adding and blending the rubber composition as well as a composition useful for tire treads and vehicle tires containing the composition are disclosed.

This invention relates to an initiator system for the polymerization of isoolefins having 4 to 16 carbon atoms, optionally with monomers polymerizable with isoolefins, the system consisting of or one or more aromatic or heteroaromatic, polycyclic hydrocarbons and an aged, organic solution of vanadium tetrachloride, wherein the concentration of the vanadium tetrachloride is 0.01 mmol to 500 mmol per liter of solvent and the molar ratio of aged vanadium tetrachloride to polycyclic hydrocarbons is in the range from 100:1 to 1:100.It is possible by means of the initiator system according to the invention to produce polyisoolefins, in particular butyl rubbers, at relatively high temperatures with only a low gel content and of a sufficiently high molecular weight.
