Abstract:
A multifeed detection apparatus and method for use in a check processing terminal including a paper supply unit for individually feeding a plurality of checks from the paper supply unit along a check transportation path in a given direction; a MICR head having a non-movable contact surface on one side of the check transportation path; a pressure member disposed on another side of the check transportation path opposite the non-movable contact surface for pressing one or more transported checks between the pressure member and the MICR head; and a displacement detection sensor for detecting physical displacement of the pressure member from the non-movable contact surface to indicate check thickness.
Abstract:
An apparatus and method technique to secure a smooth transporting of a recording medium in a printing device of the type in which a gap between the print head and the platen is included in a transport path for another purpose, e.g., reading of magnetic ink character recognition (MICR) characters on the recording medium, through use of a platen which is rotatable between two positions: a support position and a guide position, and which minimizes the gap adjacent the platen in the guide position.
Abstract:
An image-forming apparatus based on an observation of a coincidence of a circular length and a chord length. A precise transfer of the image on a transfer object is accomplished without breaking of the image by maintaining a fixed attitude of the object; by allowing the object's movement at heating and pressing of the transfer film and the object; and by preventing an adhesive layer of the film from adhering to clamps for the object and a rubber. Transfer of an accurate image from the film onto the transfer object by the image transfer apparatus is accomplished by a movable stage which is movable in a longitudinal direction of the film to locate a transfer object to be pressed and heated via a transfer film by a heating roller and a holding apparatus which is located on or on a side of the stage and which is relatively moved along with the stage while partially holding the transfer object.
Abstract:
A data reading apparatus for reading and/or scanning data from a first and second scanned medium comprising a first transportation path P1, along which the first scanned medium is conveyed and a second transportation path P2, along which the second scanned medium is conveyed and wherein the first and second transportation paths each have a common mutually shared middle transportation path through which both scanned media must pass and a common data reader reading data from each scanned medium respectively. Checks S are conveyed on the first transportation path P1, cards C are conveyed on the second transportation path P2 at a different transportation height from that of the first transportation path P1 with data read from the respective media as they are being conveyed. Because the transportation heights differ, scanned media can be transported on different transportation paths without involving special switching devices.
Abstract:
A check processing method involves capturing at a first compression rate certain portions of a received check, and evaluating, based on that captured image data, whether certain information of the check can be reproduced by image data at a second compression rate that is greater than the first compression rate. If so, then image data representing the subject portions of the check is captured at the second compression rate image data, stored, and used to electronically process a corresponding check payment transaction. If not, then a specific process is executed without using image data at the second compression rate. This processing step outputs a specific signal or stores image data containing representing the subject portions of the received check at the first compression rate. Such process may be embodied in a check processing apparatus and may be carried out in response to a program of instructions.
Abstract:
A printer for printing a barcode by discharging ink droplets from print nozzles that are used for printing bars in the bar code. The printer includes a CPU and a head carriage mechanism. The CPU divides a length of the bars of the barcode into a plurality of segments and changes which of the nozzles that are used as print nozzles in each segment such that the barcode is printed by discharging ink droplets from the print nozzles in each segment. The head carriage mechanism is for moving the print medium relative to the print nozzles. Each bar of the resulting barcode extends in a single, diagonal direction across the plurality of segments. Other printers and printing methods are also provided.

Abstract:
A printer 1 has transportation paths for conveying media in two directions, that of a first transportation path P1 and that of a second transportation path P2 (or third transportation path P3) perpendicular to the first transportation path P1. With this printer 1 a single compact unit can be used for media processing by reading and printing the media, as well as for printing receipts and validation printing.

Abstract:
A method and apparatus for inspecting the quality of transparent protective overlays. The inspection method and apparatus enables accurate inspection of formed transparent protective overlays and enables implementation of more quantitative control of transparent protective overlay quality. Such method and apparatus automatically and accurately inspects the quality of transparent protective overlays placed on substrate surfaces to determine whether the transparent protective overlay formed to protect information such as images, text, or symbols recorded on the surface of a card-type or other easily portable information-recorded medium is of acceptable quality.
