Abstract: The present disclosure relates generally to surgical instruments, and more specifically, to ophthalmic surgical instruments and methods of making the same. In particular, a surgical instrument is provided. The surgical instrument includes a cannula. A spatula is formed at an end of the cannula. The spatula extends from the cannula at a non-zero angle relative to an exterior surface of the cannula. The spatula at least partially defines an aperture at the end of the cannula. An optical fiber extends along an interior of the cannula. The optical fiber is configured to direct laser light toward the spatula.

Abstract: In certain embodiments, a corneal implant includes a transparent dome and a ring. The transparent dome has a circular base with a perimeter that has a diameter of less than 2 centimeters. The transparent dome comprises a transparent biocompatible material. The ring has an annular shape and is disposed about the perimeter of the circular base of the transparent dome. The ring comprises a biocompatible material with a surface. The peripheral portion of the surface forms openings that facilitate attachment of eye tissue to the ring. Each opening has a diameter of less than 2 millimeters.

Abstract: Particular embodiments disclosed herein provide a surgical instrument for grasping a retinal membrane. An ophthalmic surgical instrument for peeling a retinal membrane includes a handle having an actuator mounted on the handle. An outer tube has a proximal end mounted to the handle. First and second arms extend outwardly from the outer tube and each have pulling surfaces thereon. The pulling surfaces are configured such that when the outer tube is in first position, the pulling surfaces flare outwardly from one another and may both be placed simultaneously in contact with the retinal membrane. The arms may be made of a flexible material to conform to the retinal membrane. When the outer tube is in a second position, the pulling surfaces are facing one another and pressed against one another. The pulling surfaces may include barbs that point toward the outer tube when the pulling surfaces are drawn together.

Abstract: An ophthalmic surgical instrument for peeling a retinal membrane includes a handle and an actuator mounted on the handle. An outer tube is mounted to the handle and an inner rod extends within the outer tube. A grasping structure is secured to a distal end of the inner rod having first and second polymer arms secured to the inner rod. Each of the first polymer arm and the second polymer arms has a distal end that is angled to conform to the retinal membrane. The actuator is configured to control relative position of the inner rod and the outer tube in order to extend the grasping structure out of the outer tube and withdraw the grasping structure within the outer tube.

Abstract: The present disclosure generally relates to devices for ophthalmic procedures, and more particularly, to a surgical instrument for performing subretinal injections and methods of use thereof. The surgical instrument may include a handpiece configured for grasping by a user for fluid injection. The handpiece may include a first lumen disposed therein and an actuatable toggle movably coupled with the handle. The surgical instrument may further include a cannula coupled to the handpiece and configured to be introduced into an eye. The cannula may include a second lumen extending therethrough and a needle movably disposed within the second lumen. The needle may be coupled with the actuatable toggle and configured to extend from and retract into the second lumen at a distal end of the cannula upon actuation of the toggle.

Abstract: An ophthalmic surgical instrument for delaminating a retinal membrane includes a handpiece and an actuator mounted on the handpiece. An outer tube has a proximal end mounted to the handpiece. A dissection spatula is extendable outwardly relative to a distal end of the outer tube responsive to movement of the actuator, the dissection spatula defining a channel connected to an opening proximate a distal edge of the dissection spatula. A dispensing system is in fluid communication with the channel. The dispensing system may include a reservoir within the handpiece. The fluid may be dyed blue to enhance visibility of a delaminated portion of the retinal membrane.

Abstract: An ophthalmic surgical instrument for peeling a retinal membrane includes a handle and an actuator mounted on the handle. A first arm and a second arm extend outwardly from a distal end of an outer tube mounted to the handle. The first arm includes a first pulling surface and a first gripping surface and the second arm includes a second pulling surface and a second gripping surface. The pulling surface of each arm is substantially perpendicular to the gripping surface of each arm and the gripping surfaces of the arms face one another. The first pulling surface and the second pulling surface move toward one another when the outer tube is extended over the first arm and the second arm in order to raise a flap of the retinal membrane that is then gripped between the first gripping surface and the second gripping surface.

Abstract: A device for surgery that accommodates multiple different implements. The implements may be exchanged or changed out for one another over the course of a surgery in a manner that does not require disengagement of the device from a surgical site. As a result, the need to re-insert the device into the patient and other hazards associated with multiple trips into the surgical site may be minimized. In one embodiment, the device includes cannula architecture to avoid use of a separate cannula at the surgical site.

Abstract: A vitrectomy probe outfitted with a vitrectomy needle having a region of enhanced frictional character which may be referred to as an “augmented” surface region. This region may be utilized to interface with tissues such as the hyaloid membrane for forcibly shearing it from, for example, the underlying retina in a manner that avoids a degree of pulling forces on the retina in achieving the hyaloid detachment. By utilizing the vitrectomy probe to achieve the detachment, a subsequent intervention to introduce the probe for uptake of the sheared or detached hyaloid membrane material may also be avoided.
