The idea of the invention is that a master right associated with a content is stored at a first authorized device (211). An authorized device is a device which can be considered trusted and performs actions with contents according to the associated rights. These devices enforce rights that are bound to contents, and perform the security tasks of the DRM system employed. A subright is derived from the master right, which subright controls what type of access a second authorized device (261) is given to the associated content. Finally, the subright is distributed to the second authorized device, given that the second device complies with predetermined distribution criteria associated with the master right. The device distributing the subright authenticates the device which is to receive the subright, ensuring that the second device can be trusted.

A device and a method for managing power consumption of a plurality of data processing units. A scheduler (280) schedules a first process step for a first data processing unit (200) consuming a high power within a first deadline and a second process step for a second data processing unit (240) also consuming a high power within a second deadline. The scheduler further schedules the first process step and the second process step such that the two process steps do not occur concurrently thereby reducing the peak power draw from a power supply whilst preserving deadlines. This is particularly beneficial in battery-operated equipment, such as portable electronic multimedia devices, since peak power drain has been found to be an important factor in determining the battery capacity.

In the invention, e-book information is distributed on un-cartridged small media that can be made cheaply enough for use in free distribution of information. The e-book information is encoded and stored on a read-only optical disc that is 2 to 4 cm in diameter and 0.6 to 1.2 mm thick, the information being encoded with sufficient redundancy and sufficient tolerance for missing information that the disc can be conveniently handled and pocketed without losing reliability of information access. The disc has a lead-in area that is prior to all the e-book information and that contains a disc navigation area, and a lead-out area that follows all the e-book information. The disc may include multiple partitions, each partition containing sufficient access information for independent access of the e-book information within the partition without accessing any other partition. Alternatively, the disc may include multiple slots for files and that are equally spaced. For example, to provide data redundancy, at least some of the partitions are duplicate partitions that contain all the same data as another duplicate partition, and the disc navigation area contains partition descriptors that indicate all the partitions and the areas allocated to each of the partitions, and the disc also includes duplicates of the partition descriptors, the duplicate partition descriptors being stored in the lead-in area or in the lead-out area to provide redundancy of navigation information.

The recording layer includes a series of recording regions, each region comprising a plurality of tracks for magnetically recording information. The tracks in a region have a pitch p, and a region extends a distance ½ p beyond a centre line of the outermost track of the region. Neighbouring regions are separated from one another by magnetically non-recording areas having a width substantially equal to or larger than the pitch p. The writing of one region does not have thermal cross-talk on other regions.
