    摘要: A throttle valve is positioned at the entrance to a swirl type of suction passage near to the corresponding intake valve of a cylinder in an internal combustion engine. The valve is designed so that when it is opened only slightly (e.g. 30.degree.-40.degree.), the flow of intake gas passing therethrough converges to flow eccentrically along one side of the suction passage. This arrangement provides full control of the intake gas in the suction passage before it reaches the combustion chamber, even when the volume of flow is small, thereby producing an effective swirl within the combustion chamber for all operating conditions of the engine.

    摘要: An optimum control method for internal combustion engines uses the values of an engine control variable, such as engine timing, which are arranged in a map and stored in a memory. During normal operation, the engine is operated in accordance with one of the mapped engine control variable values related to engine operating conditions. During a fuel consumption minimization operation, the mapped engine control variable value is changed by an incremented amount to operate the engine therewith, and the mapped engine control variable value is replaced by the changed engine control variable value, if it is detected that the change by the incremented amount is in a direction to reduce the fuel consumption rate of the engine. This optimum engine control method can compensate for changes in the characteristics of engines caused during the manufacture or caused by changes over time during their operation, thereby ensuring the operation of an engine at a minimum rate of fuel consumption.

    摘要: An internal combustion engine is provided with an EGR system and a system for catalytic coversion of a rich air-fuel mixture into a reformed combustible gaseous mixture rich with free hydrogen. During a low or medium engine load engine operation, the engine is operated solely by an air-gasoline mixture and with an exhaust gas recirculation at a rate not higher than a predetermined first EGR rate. During a high engine load engine operation, the reformed combustible gaseous mixture is added to the air-gasoline mixture supply and simultaneously the exhaust gas recirculation is increased to a rate higher than the predetermined first EGR rate to increase the engine output, improve the engine drivability and improve the consumption of the reformed combustible gaseous mixture. The intake manifold vacuum is electrically detected to determine the load on the engine and to control valves associated with the EGR system and reformed gas supply system.

    摘要: Disclosed is an air-fuel ratio controlling device of an internal combustion engine having on its exhaust system a three way catalytic converter. The O.sub.2 sensor is disposed in the exhaust system for providing a rich or a lean signal indicating that the total air-fuel ratio is on the rich side or on the lean side of the stoichiometric air-fuel ratio, respectively. A supplementary fuel feed control device having a nozzle flapper mechanism therein is provided for controlling the amount of the supplementary fuel fed into the intake system. This amount of the supplementary fuel is rapidly increased when the total air-fuel ratio is changed from the lean side to the rich side of the stoichiometric air-fuel ratio while the amount of the supplementary fuel is slowly reduced when the total air-fuel ratio is changed from the rich side to the lean side of the stoichiometric air-fuel ratio.

    摘要: A torch-ignition internal combustion engine has a main and pre-combustion chambers communicated with each other through a torch aperture. Electrodes of a spark plug are disposed in the pre-combustion chamber at a point remote from the torch aperture. A fresh charge of a lean air-fuel mixture is supplied through an intake port into the main chamber on an intake stroke and compressed during a compression stroke so that a part of the fresh mixture charge is introduced through the torch aperture into the pre-combustion chamber. A tubular passage is provided and extends in the pre-combustion chamber toward the plug electrodes to guide the mixture part from the torch aperture toward the plug electrodes during the compression stroke for thereby displacing residual combustion gases away therefrom whereby the plug electrodes are scavenged for improved reliable spark-ignition of the mixture therearound to produce an initial combustion flame which propagates into the passage to produce a torch running through the torch aperture into the main chamber for the torch-ignition of the mixture charge therein. The residual combustion gases in the pre-combustion chamber are mixed with a portion of the fresh mixture part introduced into the pre-combustion chamber to form a stratum or strata of combustible gas which is retained in a space or spaces therein remote from the plug electrodes and which is also burnt by the initial combustion flame at a vurning velocity lower than that of the fresh mixture in the passage. The production of the torch lasts by the time the combustion of the stratum or strata of the combustible gas is completed, whereby the duration of the torch is greatly prolonged compared with the prior art with a resultant improved torch-ignition of the mixture in the main chamber.

    摘要: A torch ignition internal combustion engine has a main combustion chamber for the combustion of a lean air-fuel mixture and an auxiliary combustion chamber for the combustion of a rich air-fuel mixture. The auxiliary combustion chamber has a suction and a discharge apertures open to the main combustion chamber. The suction aperture is located near to a valve seat for an intake valve so that the auxiliary combustion chamber is communicated with an intake port through the suction aperture and a part of the main combustion chamber when the intake valve is opened. The intake port is connected at its upstream end to an air intake pipe. A fuel injection nozzle extends into the intake port and is positioned such that a straight line between a fuel discharge orifice of the nozzle and a point of the valve seat nearest to the suction aperture is included in the jet of fuel discharged from the nozzle, so that a substantial part of the fuel injection from the nozzle during an intake stroke is directed toward the suction aperture of the auxiliary combustion chamber to thereby facilitate introduction of the rich air-fuel mixture thereinto. The fuel is discharged from the nozzle continuously throughout all of the strokes of each cycle of engine operation, so that the fuel discharged during the strokes except the intake stroke is retained and properly vaporized within the intake port and mixed with air to produce an air-fuel mixture which is introduced into the main combustion chamber together with fresh air from the air intake pipe forming a lean air-fuel mixture when the intake valve is opened, whereby an improved stratified charge is provided.

    摘要: A torch ignition type internal combustion engine has a trap chamber comprising a cup-shaped member of a heat-resistant metal mounted on a cylinder head of the engine. The member has a substantially closed end protruding into a main combustion chamber and suction and discharge apertures through which the trap chamber always communicates with the main combustion chamber. A single intake port is provided in the cylinder head for supplying air-fuel mixture charges to both the main combustion chamber and trap chamber. The suction aperture is positioned adjacent to the back face of the valve head when it is in the open position so that a part of the air-fuel mixture from the single intake port flowing over the back face of the valve head is introduced through the suction aperture into the trap chamber on the intake stroke and ignited on the combustion stroke by a spark plug to provide torch jets which run through the suction and discharge apertures into the main combustion chamber, whereby a torch-ignition of the air-fuel mixture in the main combustion chamber is achieved by a simplified engine construction.
