Abstract: Different control information formats offer tradeoffs between performance for a UE and multiplexing capability for different UEs. In one aspect, a user equipment (UE) determines a first threshold to apply in selecting a format from a plurality of formats and uses the format for a first transmission of control information. The first threshold to apply in the selection of the format is determined from a set of possible values with the UE determining a first size of a first payload for the first transmission and selecting a first format for the first transmission of control information based on the first size and the first threshold. The threshold may be configurable by a base station and can reflect channel conditions prevailing at the UE and/or the need for a multiplexing capability associated with different formats.

A UE may be configured with a channel bandwidth that is less than or equal to a channel bandwidth of the serving base station, and may also be different than a channel bandwidth of one or more other UEs that are served by the base station. The base station may signal the UE-specific channel bandwidth in UE-specific signaling, such as UE-specific radio resource control (RRC) signaling.

Abstract: Some techniques and apparatuses described herein may assign resource elements of a particular resource block for transmission by two or more different antennas in a fashion such that the symbols are interleaved in frequency and/or in time, which improves frequency diversity of the two or more different antennas, thereby improving uplink performance of the UE. In some aspects, when the two or more resource blocks are contiguous, then each antenna may produce an interleaved frequency division multiple access (IFDMA) waveform, which may maintain peak to average power ratio (PAPR) properties of a single channel FDMA transmission. Thus, some techniques and apparatuses described herein may achieve transmit diversity and/or frequency diversity of a stream of symbols on two or more antennas without significantly increasing the PAPR of the stream of symbols.

Abstract: Methods, systems, and devices for wireless communications are described that provide for concurrent reference signal transmissions using common resources, such as demodulation reference signal (DMRS) transmissions, from a number of non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) transmitters. Different transmitters may use different sequences for reference signal transmissions, which may allow a receiver, such as a wireless base station, to decode the reference signal transmissions for each NOMA transmitter and perform channel estimation for each NOMA transmitter. The reference signal transmissions may be asynchronous with a bounded timing offset or quasi-synchronous, and the reference signal sequence selection may provide for relatively reliable channel estimation and coherent demodulation.

Abstract: Methods, systems, and devices for wireless communications are described. A transmitting device may identify a set of allocated resource blocks and a number of the allocated resource blocks. The transmitting device may determine a bit sequence length corresponding to the number of allocated resource blocks. The transmitting device may generate a reference signal based on a bit sequence having the bit sequence length and transmit the reference signal within the allocated resource blocks. The transmitting device may modulate the bit sequence using a π/2 binary phase shift keying modulation scheme. The transmitting device may modulate a data bit sequence using the same modulation scheme to generate a modulated data bit sequence, where a peak to average power ratio (PAPR) of tones transporting the modulated data bit sequence satisfies a PAPR threshold and a PAPR of tones transporting the reference signal also satisfies the PAPR threshold.

Abstract: Techniques are described for wireless communication. A method for wireless communication at a base station includes identifying time resources and frequency resources for narrowband communication in a plurality of subframes, identifying a plurality of user equipment (UE) devices, allocating a first portion of the time resources and the frequency resources to an uplink (UL) channel to carry UL control information, and allocating resources of the UL channel to the identified UE devices. A method for wireless communication at a UE device includes identifying time resources and frequency resources for narrowband communication in a plurality of subframes, receiving an indication of at least a first portion of the time resources and the frequency resources allocated to a UL channel to carry UL control information for the UE device, and transmitting one or both of downlink acknowledgements (ACKs) and downlink non-acknowledgements (NAKs) on the UL channel.

Abstract: Aspects of the present disclosure provide techniques for design of synchronization signals for narrowband operation, which can be used for stand-alone/in-band/guard-band deployment. An example method is provided for operations which may be performed by a base station (BS). The example method generally includes generating a primary synchronization signal (PSS) utilizing a first code sequence and a cover code applied to the first code sequence over a first number of symbols within one or more subframes, generating a secondary synchronization signal (SSS) based on a second code sequence over a second number of symbols within one or more subframes, and transmitting the PSS and the SSS in the first and second subframes to a first type of a user equipment (UE) that communicates on one or more narrowband regions of wider system bandwidth.
