Abstract: Embodiments of the invention describe a novel solution to enhance network service to devices with limited or no connectivity. Embodiments include network-aware nodes deployed by an end-user or operator which are configured by a network to achieve enhanced coverage, enhanced throughput, enhanced battery life, and mitigation of cell boundary experiences, etc. Embodiments provide these benefits to a specified or non-specified set of user equipment (e.g., neighboring user equipment). The service expansion terminal can be an available user equipment that is idle and that has been volunteered, assigned, or is a dedicated node with limited user interface and designed for carrying out enhanced coverage, enhanced throughput, enhanced battery life, and the mitigation of cell boundary experiences, etc. Embodiments may therefore provide low-cost, flexible deployment, and mobility thereby enabling boundaryless service.

Abstract: Operational and environmental efficiency in virtual radio access networks (VRANs) can be improved by offloading data traffic and/or control signaling between physical transmit points (TPs) of a virtual TP. This may allow one or more physical TPs of the virtual TP to be muted in the downlink or uplink direction, thereby reducing energy consumption. The offloading may be performed during relatively short time-intervals such that physical TP are muted for one or more transmission time intervals (TTIs) before being re-activated. The offloading may also be implemented over longer time-intervals in accordance with a traffic engineering (TE) policy. Further it is possible to re-activate a de-activated downlink transmitter of physical TP by monitoring wireless signals via an activated receiver of the physical TP.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for timing advance (TA) synchronization for uplink (UL) data transmissions are provided. A base station transmits a TA instruction to a UE. The TA instruction indicates one of at least two TA options. The first TA option indicates direct initial grant-free (GF) uplink (UL) data transmissions. The second TA option indicates indirect initial GF UL data transmissions with the UE initiating TA reference signaling for updating a TA parameter of the UE. The UE performs an initial GF UL data transmission to the base station based on the TA instruction.

The method also includes transmitting a first plurality of data on a first TTI in the first downlink TTI segment of the first TDD TTI configurations of the first TDD interval and receiving a second plurality of data on the first uplink segment of the first TDD TTI configuration of the first TDD interval.
