A power lock device for safe power output/input is a control lock composed of coding devices, decoding devices and electromagnetic switches. The coded signal will attach to the power transmitting line and keeps on transmitting. After discerning that the coded signal is correct, the decoding device turns on electromagnetic switches and conducts power to transmit. If the code is not correct, the decoding device uses the electromagnetic switches to cut off power and achieves the function of power control.

A communication protocol, designed for centralized power line networks, provides a solution for: automatic network mapping and adaptive routing, for automatic log-on of remote nodes and also for optimization of communication routes and control of the traffic volume.A Central Unit (CU) permanent polls all the known Remote Nodes (RN) and a polled RN replies with a message. A new Remote Node (RN), which hears any polling command from the CU, transmits a Burst Log-On Message direct to the CU. A new RN, which hears a reply of polled RN, but not the polling message itself, transmits a Burst Log-On Message, using the replying RN as a relay. There maybe a route of several relays between the new RN and the CU and all of them are registered in the Log On message itself. When the CU receives the message from the new RN, it performs a log on of the RN, stores its route, and starts to poll it.This process continues all the time, enabling an addition of new nodes. RN with no communication behaves as a new one and creates a new route, when the previous is no more available.A permanent improving of the existing routes is achieved by using a special field in a message, that indicates the time the message has already traveled via the network. This field is incremented by each relay on the route, and further used by each RN, which hears the message, to improve its route to the CU. The criteria used by RN is the less the time--the better the route.For data, such as a power demand, which is a function of time and should cover all the day, the quantity of data depends on the resolution in use. The system always tries to achieve the highest possible resolution, but if the collection cycle is too long, and the transmitted data doesn't cover the required period of time, the resolution and the quantity of data are automatically reduced to provide a continuous coverage of time.

Circuit breakers in an electric power distribution system, such as in a residence or a light commercial facility, are remotely reclosed using a power line communications system such as an X10 or CEBus system, which transmits a reclose signal over the power conductors to a recloser controlling the separable contacts of the circuit breaker in the load center. A remote master unit which generates the reclose signal is connected to an unaffected branch circuit, preferably by plugging into a receptacle located in a convenient part of the house or office remote from the load center. The reclosers may be addressed individually or globally.

A remote electricity metering system utilizes a central station (LC) to communicate with meters (U1-U13) over the mains (10-14), with messages to remote meters being relayed by intermediate meters and the route of a message being determined by the central station. The present invention provides alarm signalling whereby the meters can communicate directly with the central station. Each meter can generate a respective combination of alarm frequencies, preferably sequentially and inside the frequency band used for normal messaging, and the local controller monitors the mains for those frequencies. An error detecting and/or correcting code can be used for the alarm frequency combinations. The central station polls the meter or meters sending the alarm. The meters are microprocessor based, with the normal message signals and the alarm frequencies being synthesized from a sequence of digital values by a D/A converter.

The power distribution control system of the present invention provides a distributed intelligence, data acquisition and control system which collects and analyzes large amounts of data representing power usage from a power distribution substation and remote control units spread throughout a power distribution network. The system also provides the capability of various control functions for the substation and remote locations such as capacitor banks and pole switches along a distribution line. The system provides communications capabilities between local devices and also with remote control units. The system provides real time monitoring of power usage and real time control of various functions in the power distribution network.

The invention is primarily directed to sensor modules for mounting directly upon energized electrical power lines to monitor parameters associated with operation thereof, wherein the modules have a more compact lateral configuration than prior art modules designed for the same purpose. The modules include a first, cylindrical housing portion containing the sensing means and other electronic data processing and transmitting elements, and a second housing portion, affixed to the exterior of the first portion and extending not more than about 150.degree. around the periphery thereof, and enclosing mechanical elements of the module mounting means. The invention also concerns means for improving the accuracy of voltage measurements made by such modules by compensating for effects of adjacent, energized conductors, means for reducing the number of frequency channels required for RF data transmissions by a large number of sensor modules at a substation, means for acquiring time-synchronized data from multiple modules within a substation for accurate post-fault, sequence-of-events analysis, means for performing high speed sampling and comparison of cyclically variable parameters for relaying and harmonic measurement applications, and optical communications links for transmitting data from sensor modules.

At each addressed receiver location, the encoded function is performed to control selected loads in a predetermined manner. Information from the computer is converted into control signals for activating various sequences of sub-tasks by the communication system. Information from communication system is temporarily stored, converted into a suitable code, and transferred to the data processing computer by way of a teletypewriter terminal. Provision is also made for receiving and responding to priority signals from the system.
