摘要： A magnetic tape cartridge loader and unloader includes a platform positionable in front of a storage slot of a storage magazine and having a pivotable gripper that releases the cartridge from the storage slot, engages and pulls the cartridge from the slot onto the platform with a hook, engages a back edge of the cartridge with a second hook, and pushes the cartridge into a tape streaming device. The reverse operation is performed to unload the cartridge from the tape streaming device and store it in the storage magazine. The platform includes a locking device to hold the cartridge in position during movement of the platform. The gripper has two oppositely directed spring loaded hooks to engage the cartridge. The gripper is driven laterally by a threaded nut on a lead screw and is pivoted between engaging and disengaging positions of the cartridge engaging hook by a spur gear and gear segment arrangement on a guide along which the gripper slides. Sensors sense the position of the gripper to determine if a cartridge is engaged and to calibrate the automatic operation of the apparatus.

摘要： Tape cartridge picker including a turntable that rotates in a fixed base to interface with at least one tape cartridge storage location and at least one tape drive. The turntable includes a cavity configured to receive a tape cartridge. The cavity is defined in the turntable about a central axis of rotation so that once received in the cavity, the tape cartridge may be rotated within the turntable for delivery to one of the at least one storage location and the at least one tape drive. Tape cartridges are loaded onto the turntable using a translation arm that extends horizontally from the turntable to engage or hook a tape cartridge and pull the tape cartridge into the cavity. Tape cartridges are unloaded from the turntable by extending the translation arm to slide the tape cartridge out of the cavity and into one of the at least one storage location and the at least one tape drive.

摘要： The cartridge stop/compression pad includes a beveled portion and a planar portion that permits the cartridge stop/compression pad to serve a dual function of compression pad and cartridge stop. During retrieval of tape cartridges from a single cartridge interface, the planar portion of the compression pad is oriented such that a tape cartridge is stopped during manual insertion from the single cartridge interface in position for selection and retrieval by the cartridge picker. During retrieval of tape cartridges from all other locations, tape cartridges contact the beveled portion of the cartridge stop/compression pad causing the cartridge stop/compression pad to function as a compression pad and expand vertically upward to permit the cartridge to be fully received into the cavity of the cartridge picker.

The receivers are positionable in front of a cartridge pocket in order to change a cartridge between the receiver and the cartridge pocket. Cartridges can be inserted or removed through a port of the housing of the library into the receiver of the magazine. The cartridge pocket, a receiver positioned in front of the cartridge pocket, and the port of the housing may be linearly aligned such that cartridges can also be inserted through the port directly into the cartridge pocket or can be removed directly from the cartridge pocket through the port.

摘要： The tape cartridge transport magazine receives and stores tape cartridges in a horizontal orientation relative to the tape cartridge transport magazine to achieve a substantially smaller form factor. Once loaded into the magazine, the tape cartridges are shuffled in a vertical closed loop within the magazine so that any one of the tape cartridges can be positioned for selection by a cartridge picker. During shuffling within the magazine, individual tape cartridges are not flipped or reoriented, but remain properly oriented for selection by the cartridge picker. When used with a tape cartridge autoloader/library system as disclosed herein, a pair of interchangeable magazines can be utilized to store and provide tape cartridges for selection by a rotating cartridge picker.

摘要： A data storage system is provided for storing and retrieving data. The system includes: a conveyor system for carrying a plurality of data cartridges; and, a plurality of independently operable drive mechanisms, each one having a data cartridge transfer mechanism. The conveyor system is adapted to position a selected one of the data cartridges to the transfer mechanism of a selected one of the drive mechanisms. When so positioned, the transfer mechanism removes the data cartridge and inserts it into the drive mechanism for processing (i.e., data may be written onto the data cartridge or data may be read from the data cartridge). The data cartridge may then be withdrawn from the drive mechanism after processing and returned to the conveyor system. Because each one of the drive mechanisms is operable independently of the other drives and each drive has its own transfer mechanism, more than one data cartridge may be processed during the same time period, or during overlapping time periods.

The cassettes are pushed laterally from the end stretch of the feed conveyor for being loaded onto the collection element until they form thereon a row comprised of a given number of cassettes. The collection element is then tilted to let the cassette row fall onto a tray previously positioned under the collection element.

摘要： An automated cassette loader system includes a front loading tape drive mounted in a standard height enclosure with a removable magazine including cassettes stored in front to rear alignment in two levels. The cassettes are pushed between entry and exit positions by pushing one cassette out of a push position in one level and then pushing a cassette from a push position in the other level. The cassette pushed out of the magazine is transported to the front loading tape drive and, when removed therefrom, transported to the intake of the other level of the magazine.

摘要： A feed unit having a storage station in which a plurality of trays each carrying a plurality of cassette rows disposed consecutively in side-by-side relation is manually stacked. A first pusher mechanism moves the lowermost tray in the stack along a slide track, towards a linear feeder. An abutment wall stops the movement of trays along the slide track when a cassette row reaches a predetermined loading position, so that it is picked up by a transport arm that will deposit it on the linear feeder. A third pusher mechanism picks up the individual cassettes from the linear feeder and sends them to an output conveyor.
