A magnetic tape cartridge loader and unloader includes a platform positionable in front of a storage slot of a storage magazine and having a pivotable gripper that releases the cartridge from the storage slot, engages and pulls the cartridge from the slot onto the platform with a hook, engages a back edge of the cartridge with a second hook, and pushes the cartridge into a tape streaming device. The reverse operation is performed to unload the cartridge from the tape streaming device and store it in the storage magazine. The platform includes a locking device to hold the cartridge in position during movement of the platform. The gripper has two oppositely directed spring loaded hooks to engage the cartridge. The gripper is driven laterally by a threaded nut on a lead screw and is pivoted between engaging and disengaging positions of the cartridge engaging hook by a spur gear and gear segment arrangement on a guide along which the gripper slides. Sensors sense the position of the gripper to determine if a cartridge is engaged and to calibrate the automatic operation of the apparatus.

The tape cartridge transport magazine receives and stores tape cartridges in a horizontal orientation relative to the tape cartridge transport magazine to achieve a substantially smaller form factor. Once loaded into the magazine, the tape cartridges are shuffled in a vertical closed loop within the magazine so that any one of the tape cartridges can be positioned for selection by a cartridge picker. During shuffling within the magazine, individual tape cartridges are not flipped or reoriented, but remain properly oriented for selection by the cartridge picker. When used with a tape cartridge autoloader/library system as disclosed herein, a pair of interchangeable magazines can be utilized to store and provide tape cartridges for selection by a rotating cartridge picker.

A data storage system is provided for storing and retrieving data. The system includes: a conveyor system for carrying a plurality of data cartridges; and, a plurality of independently operable drive mechanisms, each one having a data cartridge transfer mechanism. The conveyor system is adapted to position a selected one of the data cartridges to the transfer mechanism of a selected one of the drive mechanisms. When so positioned, the transfer mechanism removes the data cartridge and inserts it into the drive mechanism for processing (i.e., data may be written onto the data cartridge or data may be read from the data cartridge). The data cartridge may then be withdrawn from the drive mechanism after processing and returned to the conveyor system. Because each one of the drive mechanisms is operable independently of the other drives and each drive has its own transfer mechanism, more than one data cartridge may be processed during the same time period, or during overlapping time periods.

A first pusher mechanism moves the lowermost tray in the stack along a slide track, towards a linear feeder. An abutment wall stops the movement of trays along the slide track when a cassette row reaches a predetermined loading position, so that it is picked up by a transport arm that will deposit it on the linear feeder. A third pusher mechanism picks up the individual cassettes from the linear feeder and sends them to an output conveyor.
