There is provided a recording medium exchanging-type recording and reproducing apparatus in which its small-sized forming can be realized, either reproducing or recording operation can be carried out within a short period of time, and it is advantageous in view of light weight forming or cost. The first and second magazines for storing the tape cartridge in such a way that the tape cartridge can be inserted into or taken out are spaced apart in a lateral direction in the casing so as to cause their longitudinal directions to become in parallel to each other, and there is provided a transferring space extending along a longitudinal direction of these first and second magazines. The moving mechanism holds the tape cartridge and moves up and down in the transferring space. The delivering mechanism delivers the tape cartridge between the first and second magazines and the moving mechanism. The moving mechanism performs installing of the tape cartridge against the recording and reproducing mechanism arranged at a location near the lower part of the transferring space.

A storage library suitable for rack-mount and desktop installations. Internally the storage media cartridges and one or more media drives are arranged in a horseshoe configuration. The storage media cartridges are positioned in slots along the left and right sides of the library, and the media drives are positioned adjacent the back side. Additional slots may be provided near the middle of the horseshoe configuration to increase the library's storage capacity. A robotic mechanism is positioned between the two rows of storage media cartridges and operative to transport the storage media cartridges between the media drive and the slots. The slots are arranged so that the storage media cartridges can be installed and removed from the library through an opening provided in the front side of the library. The storage media cartridges are oriented in the slots so that their labels are viewable through the opening. A bar-code reader may be mounted on the robotic assembly to read bar-codes on the labels.

A cassette handling system has a plurality of storage units each storing a plurality of cassettes and at least one tape drive unit. A carrier assembly transports a cassette from one unit to another by extracting the cassette from one of the units and inserting the cassette into another unit. An engaging assembly with a pair of couplers is mounted on a carrier of the carrier assembly. The couplers engage the cassette and hold the cassette above a reference platen on the top of the carrier. The reference platen defines a position from which the cassette is insertable into the units without obstruction. The engaging assembly disengages the cassette onto the reference platen and immediately re-engages the cassette in an accurately determined vertical position. The cassette is then inserted into the desired unit. The carrier assembly also has a threaded shaft which is tensioned for avoiding or damping vibration due to the movement of various components thereof.

The finger disengages the cartridge when the thumb assembly is in the extended position and the cartridge picker is moved to the second position.
